SCOPE:
Provides weekend and as-needed leadership coverage for shelter operations with primary responsibility for staff supervision, shift coordination, participant/guest safety, incident response, and consistent implementation of low-barrier, Housing First, trauma-informed shelter practices. Serves as the site management representative during assigned shifts and supports a safe, respectful, and well-documented environment for participants/guests, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Provide active supervision, direction, and support to shelter staff during assigned weekend, holiday, evening, and as-needed shifts; ensure staff remain on post and complete assigned duties.
2. Ensure each shift is adequately covered; respond to call-outs, breaks, schedule changes, and immediate staffing concerns; notify the Shelter Director of unresolved coverage issues.
3. Support a warm, welcoming shelter environment grounded in Housing First, low-barrier access, trauma-informed care, de-escalation, and respectful guest engagement.
4. Monitor staff performance and shelter activity to ensure compliance with policies, contract requirements, safety protocols, emergency procedures, confidentiality standards, and management directives.
5. Respond to incidents, guest concerns, behavioral escalations, emergencies, and safety/security issues; coordinate with leadership, law enforcement, EMS, crisis response, or facilities as appropriate.
6. Ensure incident reports, shift logs, room-search documentation, guest notes, and required reports are completed accurately and submitted timely; review logs for completeness before shift close.
7. Conduct regular walk-throughs of shelter areas to assess staffing, guest safety, cleanliness, room conditions, security, and operational concerns; document and report urgent facilities/maintenance needs.
8. Provide coaching, redirection, and immediate feedback to staff; document concerns and elevate performance, policy, attendance, or conduct issues to the Senior Director for follow-up.
9. Support staff orientation, required training, CPR/Narcan/First Aid readiness, and staff understanding of shelter procedures, emergency response, and participant/guest engagement expectations.
10. Communicate end-of-shift updates to leadership, including staffing issues, incidents, unresolved guest concerns, safety concerns, and needed follow-up. Perform other shelter leadership duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE:
1. High school diploma or GED required;
2. Associate or Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Social Work, Business, Education, or related field preferred.
3. Minimum of two (2) years of experience in shelter, residential, human services, crisis response, or homelessness services; prior lead or supervisory experience preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Working knowledge of low-barrier shelter operations, Housing First, trauma-informed care, de-escalation, safety practices, and emergency response.
2. Ability to supervise staff, make sound decisions during crisis, mediate conflict, solve problems, and maintain a calm professional presence.
3. Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to complete accurate documentation, shift reports, incident reports, and follow-up notes.
4. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with participants/guests, staff, leadership, partner agencies, law enforcement, EMS, and community representatives.
5. Must be flexible and available for weekend, holiday, evening, emergency, and as-needed shifts. Valid Florida driver's license, reliable transportation, and ability to be insured under company vehicle insurance policy may be required by site assignment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Frequent walking, standing, and movement throughout shelter areas; general office environment; frequent interruptions; possible exposure to behavioral emergencies or crisis situations; occasional travel between sites. Uses computer and peripherals, phones/radios, office equipment, safety equipment, and emergency response supplies.
