Job Overview:

The HVAC Mechanic installs, operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment at Defense Supply Center Columbus. The position performs preventive and corrective maintenance to keep facility systems safe, efficient, reliable, and fully operational in accordance with work orders, manufacturer guidance, ASHRAE standards, OSHA requirements, applicable codes, and contract requirements.


Support Hours: Applicant shall be available during core work hours as established the Government customer.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Install, service, troubleshoot, and repair environmental-control systems in offices, facilities, and other assigned buildings.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on chillers, cooling towers, air-handling units, dampers, VAV boxes, condensers, pumps, valves, fans, unit heaters, boilers, heat exchangers, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, fan coils, DX systems, heat pumps, window units, ice machines, coolers, refrigerators, freezers, and related controls.
  • Mount compressors and condensers; fabricate, assemble, and install ductwork, chassis parts, evaporator units, tubing, and piping using applicable hand, power, metalworking, threading, and welding tools.
  • Cut, bend, thread, join, and solder tubing or piping and install expansion, discharge, and other valves to complete refrigerant circuits.
  • Connect motors, compressors, temperature and humidity controls, ventilation fans, control panels, filters, and related components.
  • Charge and recover refrigerants, observe pressure and vacuum gauges, adjust controls, and test joints and connections for leaks in accordance with EPA requirements.
  • Diagnose equipment failures and replace or repair defective controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, wiring, motors, compressors, and other components.
  • Perform scheduled inspections, operational checks, seasonal start-up and shutdown, winterization, freeze-protection, and return-to-service activities.
  • Inspect natural-gas appliance connections and support required maintenance in accordance with NFPA 54 and applicable safety standards when assigned.
  • Operate systems efficiently, report abnormal temperatures, pressures, alarms, leaks, or other adverse conditions, and support energy-conservation requirements.
  • Complete work orders, refrigerant records, maintenance logs, equipment updates, and other required documentation accurately and on time.
  • Follow lockout/tagout, hazard-control, PPE, Activity Hazard Analysis, work-area protection, cleanup, and Government-property requirements.

Competencies:

  • Commercial and industrial HVAC and refrigeration troubleshooting.
  • Refrigeration theory, refrigerant handling, and leak detection.
  • Electrical controls, motors, compressors, and control panels.
  • Piping, tubing, soldering, brazing, ductwork, and mechanical assembly.
  • Preventive maintenance and root-cause diagnosis.
  • Accurate work-order and refrigerant documentation.
  • Safety compliance, customer service, teamwork, and reliability.
Requirements

Minimum Requirements/Education:

  • Training, knowledge, experience, and skills pertinent to the HVAC and refrigeration equipment assigned, supported by current manufacturer training or certification from an organization acceptable to the Government.
  • Demonstrated ability to install, operate, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on commercial HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • One or more HVAC credentials required by the PWS: NATE HVAC Service Technician, HVAC Excellence Professional Level, or UA Star HVAC Mastery certification, together with at least 16 hours of qualifying continuing education each year.
  • Current EPA Section 608 certification appropriate for the refrigerant equipment serviced, plus all licenses and certifications required by applicable federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
  • Ability to complete required site orientation, safety, security, installation-access and annual refresher training.


Preferred Skills:

  • Experience maintaining HVAC and refrigeration systems in a large commercial, industrial, military, or federal facility.
  • Experience with chillers, boilers, cooling towers, air-handling equipment, heat pumps, DX systems, building controls, natural-gas equipment, and commercial refrigeration.
  • Experience using computerized maintenance or Government work-order systems such as EBS Plant Maintenance.

Security Requirement:

  • Must satisfy installation access and background-screening requirements and obtain and maintain DBIDS credentials and a Common Access Card (CAC), as applicable.
