Northwest Nazarene University’s College of Behavioral and Social Sciences includes undergraduate and graduate programs in Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, and Counselor Education. Graduate programs include master’s degrees in Social Work and Counselor Education and the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology.
The Counselor Education program offers emphases in Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling; and School Counseling and is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The Master of Social Work program offers specializations in Clinical Mental Health and Addictions and Integrated Clinical and Community Practice and is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
Psychology Department
The Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology program prepares students as practitioner-scholars who integrate psychological science, clinical practice, and thoughtful consideration of faith and spirituality. The program is built around three areas of emphasis: clinical competence, academic rigor, and faith integration.
The PsyD program is accredited, on contingency, by the American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation. Students receive training in psychotherapy, psychological assessment, consultation, research, and other areas of professional psychology in preparation for licensure as clinical psychologists.
Description of Position
Northwest Nazarene University’s College of Behavioral and Social Sciences invites applications for core faculty positions in the APA accredited Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology program. Appointments may range from approximately half-time to full-time, depending on the candidate’s interests, qualifications, availability, and program needs.
The PsyD program is primarily a face-to-face doctoral program based on NNU’s campus in Nampa, Idaho. We are particularly interested in faculty who can be regularly present on campus for teaching, mentoring, program activities, and collaboration with students and colleagues. Limited flexibility in faculty location or modality may be considered in exceptional circumstances based on program needs.
Faculty members contribute to doctoral education through teaching, student mentoring, clinical and research supervision, dissertation mentorship, scholarship, and service to the program and university. We welcome applicants with expertise in clinical psychology broadly and are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching and professional experience can contribute to areas such as psychological assessment, clinical skills, research methods and statistics, psychopathology, intervention, or other areas of health service psychology.
Faculty are expected to contribute to a collaborative doctoral training environment focused on high-quality clinical education, professional development, scholarship, and integration of Christian faith with the science and practice of psychology.
Essential Functions
Responsibilities will vary according to appointment percentage, qualifications, and program needs and may include:
- Teaches graduate courses in the PsyD program consistent with areas of expertise and program needs.
- Develops and revises courses and syllabi in alignment with program outcomes and APA accreditation requirements.
- Advises and mentors PsyD students in their academic and professional development.
- Chairs or serves on doctoral dissertation committees and support students through the dissertation process.
- Provides clinical supervision when appropriate to professional qualifications and program needs.
- Participates in curriculum development, program evaluation, and accreditation-related activities.
- Maintains scholarly activity appropriate to faculty appointment and university expectations.
- Maintains regular availability to students.
- Participates in PsyD faculty meetings, committees, student recruitment and interviews, and program events as appropriate to appointment.
- Participates in service to the department, college, university, and profession as appropriate to appointment.
- Models ethical, professional, and culturally responsive practice consistent with the profession of psychology and the mission of Northwest Nazarene University.
- Contributes to a learning environment that supports academic rigor, clinical competence, professional development, and thoughtful integration of faith and psychology.
- Performs other duties consistent with faculty responsibilities and appointment level.
Most PsyD courses are offered in the late afternoon or evening.
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in Clinical Psychology or a closely related area of psychology from an APA-accredited doctoral program
- Ability to teach and mentor students at the doctoral level
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students
- Commitment to ethical, professional, and culturally responsive practice
- Ability to contribute to the teaching, scholarship, service, and mentoring responsibilities associated with a core faculty appointment
- Commitment to the Christian mission of Northwest Nazarene University. The University requires faculty members to be professing Christians, preferably within the Wesleyan tradition, and to support the mission and lifestyle expectations of the University
Preferred Qualifications
- Licensure as a psychologist or eligibility for licensure as a psychologist in Idaho.
- Experience teaching in graduate or doctoral psychology programs.
- Experience supervising clinical work or psychological assessment.
- Experience mentoring doctoral research or serving on dissertation committees.
- Expertise in quantitative research methods, statistics, psychological assessment, or another area that complements current program faculty.
- Familiarity with APA accreditation standards and doctoral program assessment.
- Evidence of an active or developing scholarly agenda.
Compensation and Benefits
Appointment percentage and salary will be determined based on program needs and the candidate’s qualifications, education, experience, and availability.
