We’re looking for an experienced Medical Assistant to support our nephrology practice with patient care, clinical coordination, and daily office operations. If you’re organized, attentive to detail, and passionate about creating a positive patient experience, we’d love to hear from you.
What You’ll Do
- Welcome patients, prepare them for their visits, obtain and document vital signs, and update relevant medical information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Support nephrologists during patient consultations and help ensure an efficient flow throughout the clinic.
- Review upcoming appointments to ensure necessary laboratory results, imaging studies, ultrasounds, hospital records, and other requested clinical information are available for the provider before the patient is evaluated.
- Coordinate laboratory orders, diagnostic testing, ultrasounds, imaging, and follow-up appointments as directed by the physician.
- Process medication refill requests and medication prior authorizations according to provider protocols.
- Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits and assist with referrals and authorization requirements.
- Coordinate incoming and outgoing referrals and communicate with primary care physicians, specialists, hospitals, dialysis facilities, and other healthcare providers to obtain or transmit necessary clinical information and consultation reports.
- Schedule patient appointments, follow-up visits, laboratory testing, imaging, and other services ordered by the physician.
- Maintain accurate and complete patient information and documentation within the EMR.
- Respond to patient calls and messages, communicate physician instructions when appropriate, and route clinical concerns to the provider.
- Assist with front desk and checkout responsibilities as needed, including scheduling follow-up care and ensuring patients understand their next steps before leaving the office.
- Help identify outstanding orders, results, referrals, or follow-up needs and communicate them to the appropriate team member or provider.
- Maintain an organized clinical environment and follow HIPAA, infection control, safety, and patient privacy requirements.
- Collaborate with physicians and team members to provide a smooth, compassionate, and coordinated patient experience.
What You’ll Bring
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a Medical Assistant program or equivalent relevant experience.
- At least two years of experience in a physician practice, medical office, or outpatient setting preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and familiarity with chronic conditions such as chronic kidney disease, hypertension, and diabetes.
- Experience working with EMR systems. Familiarity with insurance eligibility, referrals, prior authorizations, and physician-office workflows.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and customer-service skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a busy medical practice.
- Compassionate and professional approach to patient care.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with physicians and other team members.
- Understanding of HIPAA, OSHA, infection control, and patient privacy requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, or equivalent).
- Previous experience in nephrology, internal medicine, primary care, or chronic disease management.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish strongly preferred.
- Experience with insurance verification, referrals, medication prior authorizations, and care coordination.
Work Environment
This position involves direct patient interaction in a physician-office setting, computer work, and periods of sitting, standing, walking, and bending. Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided when required.
