Salary Range: $55,000-$60,000
Direct reports: Facilities and Security Nonexempt Staff
Expected Hours of Work: 40 hours per week; schedule varies based on operational needs. Occasional early mornings, late evenings, weekends and holidays to accommodate special events and emergencies.
Summary:
The Facilities and Security Manager maintains the operational excellence, physical condition, and safety of the Science Center and the Steamship William G. Mather. This role reports to the Director of Facilities & Security and oversees facility maintenance, work order management, coordinates vendors, schedules and supervises department staff, coordinates preventative maintenance programs, and assists with safety and security operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the department director to identify, prioritize, budget, schedule, and implement facility repairs, maintenance and preventative maintenance schedules utilizing the UpKeep computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Assign and perform skilled mechanical, electrical, and plumbing maintenance, and supervise staff or contractors in project execution.
- Operate building automation systems (HVAC controls), establishing and adjusting weekly schedules for building operations.
- Supervise and schedule Facilities & Security nonexempt staff across daily operations, work orders, tasks, and special projects.
- Manage staffing costs, supply purchases, vendor repairs, and other expenditures within department budget.
- Review, approve and code invoices within the financial management system (Financial Edge).
- Procure facility and maintenance supplies as required for daily operations and ongoing projects.
- Assist the department director with managing capital improvement projects as needed.
- Maintain compliance certifications for life safety systems, fire department requirements, and diesel fuel storage regulations.
- Operate and test life safety devices—including the central fire panel—serving as Acting Fire Chief when required and coordinating facility evacuations.
- Coordinate the setup, staging, and breakdown of tables, chairs, tents, and staging for internal meetings and special events.
- Support and execute daily opening and closing procedures for the Science Center and Steamship.
- Respond to security dispatches, access control needs, service calls, and medical emergencies as an active CPR/AED and First Aid responder.
- Monitor security surveillance systems, conduct routine patrols, identify building and safety deficiencies, and generate accurate, timely incident reports.
- Maintain strict accountability for assigned department assets, including master security keys, two-way radios, and the F&S manager duty phone.

Working Conditions:
This role requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, climbing narrow stairwells and ladders, stooping, reaching, and working outdoors in varied weather conditions. Must be able to regularly lift items up to 50 lbs. and push/pull a minimum of 200 lbs. Work involves exposure to elevated noise levels requiring hearing protection, potential requirement for respiratory protection, and non-climate-controlled environments on the historic Steamship.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or general education degree required. Graduation from a vocational or technical school in a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of commercial or industrial maintenance experience required.
- Demonstrated experience in staff supervision, maintenance workflow coordination, or security operations preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical practices, welding, and/or power and hand tool operation.
- Proficiency in operating CMMS software (such as UpKeep), digital incident reporting platforms, email, and standard office applications.
- Ability to interpret architectural floor plans, technical manuals, and event itineraries.
- Strong leadership, project scheduling, and time-management skills with the ability to lead daily operational crews effectively.
- Ability to obtain tow motor and vertical lift equipment certifications.
- Active CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification upon hire.
- Flexibility to adapt to fluctuating operational schedules, on-call situations, event shifts, and emergency response needs.
