Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Materials and Heavy Haul Supervisor for our facility in Von Ormy, Texas (South San Antonio area). The ideal candidate will have supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment, strong knowledge of material handling and yard operations, and a commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
The Materials and Heavy Haul Supervisor oversees yard material handling and heavy equipment movement to support safe and efficient manufacturing operations. This role is responsible for executing loading, unloading, transportation, and staging activities in alignment with production and shipping priorities.
The position leads material movement supporting Packaging, Ship Loose, and Electrical Yard operations while supervising the Heavy Haul team responsible for moving large materials, loading and unloading equipment, and transporting completed units throughout the facility.
Key Responsibilities:
Yard Material Movement and Production Support
- Oversee daily yard material handling activities supporting Packaging, Ship Loose, and Electrical Yard operations.
- Ensure kits, components, accessories, and major assemblies are delivered to the correct work areas in accordance with production schedules.
- Assign daily responsibilities to Material Handlers and Heavy Haul personnel based on priorities established by the Materials Manager and Production leadership.
- Coordinate the movement of enclosures, fuel tanks, skid frames, generators, switchgear, platforms, and other large assemblies between production, staging, storage, and loading areas.
- Verify material readiness prior to movement and communicate shortages, discrepancies, or access constraints to the appropriate departments.
Heavy Haul Team Supervision
- Lead and supervise the Heavy Haul team in the safe and efficient movement of large materials, equipment, and completed units throughout the facility.
- Verify that personnel, equipment, rigging, and work areas are properly prepared before any movement begins.
- Ensure all lifting and material handling activities are performed in accordance with approved procedures, equipment capacities, load weights, lifting points, and center-of-gravity requirements.
- Assign and communicate clear responsibilities to operators, riggers, spotters, and signal personnel to ensure safe and coordinated operations.
- Monitor heavy haul activities to ensure compliance with safety standards and operational requirements.
Loading and Unloading
- Supervise the safe and efficient loading and unloading of large equipment, customer-supplied materials, components, and completed units.
- Coordinate personnel, equipment, and resources to ensure loading and unloading activities are completed according to operational requirements and schedules.
- Verify unit, job, and equipment identification against receiving, shipping, and production documentation.
- Confirm all required inspections, approvals, and readiness checks are completed prior to loading finished products.
- Ensure proper blocking, bracing, protection, and load securement methods are utilized and verified in accordance with company standards and transportation requirements.
- Document and promptly report any visible damage, missing items, or discrepancies to the appropriate Materials, Quality, Shipping, or Receiving personnel to ensure required information is communicated to the responsible departments.
Packaging, Ship Loose, and Electrical Yard Support
- Lead and direct material handling activities supporting the Packaging, Ship Loose, and Electrical Yard teams.
- Ensure materials are properly staged, labeled, and segregated by project and job to maintain organization and prevent material mix-ups.
- Support Ship Loose verification processes by ensuring required materials and components are available for review against approved bills of material (BOMs) and packing lists.
- Maintain clear identification and separation of verified, incomplete, damaged, and nonconforming materials.
- Ensure customer-supplied equipment and materials are properly identified, protected, and maintained throughout handling and storage.
- Collaborate with Production and Materials teams to resolve material flow issues and support on-time completion of manufacturing activities.
Inventory Accuracy and Material Control
- Maintain accurate inventory records and physical locations for yard inventory, work-in-process units, finished units, and customer-owned equipment.
- Ensure all material transfers, movements, and location changes are promptly and accurately recorded in the ERP system or designated tracking tools.
- Verify job numbers, part numbers, quantities, and serial numbers to ensure inventory accuracy and traceability.
- Support cycle counts, physical inventories, and inventory audits for assigned areas.
- Investigate inventory discrepancies and implement corrective actions to improve inventory accuracy and material control.
- Ensure materials are properly stored, labeled, protected, and handled to prevent damage or loss.
- Prevent the use or movement of damaged, unidentified, or nonconforming materials without proper authorization.
Equipment, Rigging, and Safety
- Oversee the safe operation of forklifts, telehandlers, cranes, yard trucks, and other material-handling equipment.
- Ensure operators, riggers, and signal personnel maintain required training, certifications, and authorizations.
- Verify completion of required pre-use inspections for equipment, rigging, and lifting devices.
- Ensure slings, shackles, lifting devices, and related equipment are suitable for use, properly maintained, and stored appropriately.
- Remove unsafe or damaged equipment from service and coordinate repairs and preventive maintenance with the Maintenance team.
- Conduct regular safety observations and reinforce compliance with PPE requirements, housekeeping standards, traffic controls, and safe work practices.
- Report and investigate incidents, near misses, equipment damage, and unsafe conditions, implementing corrective actions as needed.
Leadership and Continuous Improvement
- Provide daily leadership, direction, coaching, and training to support employee development and operational success.
- Establish and reinforce expectations related to safety, quality, productivity, inventory accuracy, attendance, and teamwork.
- Develop team capabilities through cross-training and skill development in material handling and heavy haul operations.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve material flow, reduce handling damage, minimize production delays, and increase operational efficiency.
- Collaborate with Materials and Production leadership to improve yard organization, staging strategies, and point-of-use material delivery.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical training or an associate degree preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in material handling, yard operations, warehouse operations, manufacturing, or heavy equipment transportation.
- Previous lead or supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience handling large equipment, fabricated assemblies, or industrial products in a manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of safe rigging, lifting, loading, unloading, and material handling practices.
- Ability to read and interpret material identification, bills of material (BOMs), packing lists, handling instructions, and basic technical drawings.
- Experience with inventory control processes and ERP systems.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other inventory or operational tracking systems.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required equipment certifications, licenses, and company authorizations
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout manufacturing facilities and outdoor yard areas for extended periods.
- Ability to bend, reach, climb, and access equipment or work areas as required.
- Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, manufacturing noise, moving equipment, and uneven surfaces.
- Ability to safely perform material handling and operational duties using appropriate equipment, tools, and assistance.
- Must be able to wear and utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
