Licensed Optician
Beach Eye Care | Full-Time | Virginia Beach & Chesapeake
Your optical experience should be put to use.
Beach Eye Care is looking for an experienced Virginia Licensed Optician who combines strong technical optical knowledge with exceptional patient care, attention to detail, and the ability to perform in a busy optical environment.
We are not looking for someone simply to sell glasses. We are looking for an experienced optical professional who can understand a patient’s needs, recommend the right solution, troubleshoot difficult situations, and confidently take an eyewear order from consultation through final dispense.
Our Licensed Opticians play an important role in both the patient experience and the technical quality of our optical department.
Compensation
Expected total compensation: $21–$28 per hour.
Compensation includes an hourly base rate plus commission. Our commission program typically adds approximately $4–$8 per hour to base pay depending on performance and your ability to educate patients and recommend appropriate products.
Base pay for Licensed Opticians is higher than our entry-level Eyewear Consultant position and is determined by relevant optical experience, licensure, and overall qualifications.
This is not a high-pressure sales environment. Our approach is based on understanding the patient’s prescription, lifestyle, and visual needs, educating them about appropriate options, and helping them make the best decision.
An Established Optical Team With Room to Grow
You will be joining a growing optical team of approximately 23 people, with an average tenure of about 8 years.
Experienced opticians and leaders help train and support new team members, while we expect each person to take ownership of their learning, development, and performance.
Beach Eye Care is a multi-location ophthalmology and optometry practice with an optical department that continues to grow. Licensed Opticians have opportunities to expand their technical knowledge, take on additional responsibility, and develop into future leadership roles.
What You Will Do
As a Licensed Optician, you will:
- Consult with patients about prescription, lifestyle, lens, frame, and eyewear needs
- Recommend appropriate lens designs, materials, treatments, and frame options
- Take and verify accurate optical measurements
- Properly fit, adjust, repair, and dispense eyewear
- Troubleshoot visual complaints, adaptation issues, and eyewear concerns
- Determine appropriate next steps when a patient is experiencing difficulty with new eyewear
- Inspect completed eyewear for prescription accuracy, workmanship, fit, and Beach Eye Care quality standards
- Maintain applicable ANSI and professional standards
- Help manage patient flow during busy periods while maintaining the integrity of our Doctor Driven Process
- Review jobs and help ensure eyewear moves efficiently between the practice, laboratories, and patients
- Assist with frame inventory, product organization, and maintaining appropriate frame-board assortments
- Accurately use our optical point-of-sale and patient-management systems
- Assist patients with understanding applicable vision-plan benefits
- Work collaboratively with doctors, optical leadership, and other optical team members
- Identify problems and communicate solutions rather than simply passing problems to someone else
- Support and share knowledge with less-experienced optical team members
The Optician We Are Looking For
Technical ability matters, but we are equally interested in how you work.
Strong candidates should:
- Have excellent optical fundamentals and professional judgment
- Be confident troubleshooting difficult eyewear and visual concerns
- Provide exceptional customer service without losing efficiency
- Be comfortable educating patients and making recommendations
- Work quickly while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
- Remain organized during high-volume periods
- Take ownership of problems through resolution
- Communicate effectively with patients, doctors, coworkers, and leadership
- Give and receive constructive feedback professionally
- Be self-motivated rather than waiting to be directed through every task
- Understand that great optical care requires both technical expertise and a strong patient experience
- Be willing to continue learning as lens technology, products, systems, and processes change
Premium Eyewear, Lens Technology & Patient Care
Beach Eye Care provides more than basic optical retail.
Our opticians work with modern lens technology, advanced measurements, premium lens options, and a broad range of eyewear from everyday products through premium and luxury frame collections.
The goal is not simply to complete a transaction. It is to provide patients with eyewear that performs well, fits correctly, meets their visual needs, and represents the level of care they expect from their eye-care practice.

What Success Looks Like Here
A successful Licensed Optician at Beach Eye Care is someone patients and coworkers can rely on when an optical situation becomes more complicated.
You know how to sell, but you also know why you are recommending a particular lens or frame. You can recognize when something is wrong, determine the likely cause, and work toward a solution. You care about accuracy, but you can also maintain pace when the department gets busy.
Most importantly, you understand that being a Licensed Optician is more than knowing how to take measurements or adjust a frame. It is the combination of technical expertise, judgment, patient education, problem solving, and service that creates an exceptional optical experience.
