Description

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Engineering Technician – GIS/IT

The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and support of the City’s spatial data, GIS, and IT tools and systems according to the standard set forth by the Director of Information Technology.


Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Create and maintain the organization’s spatial data using approved GIS tools
  • Analyze data using GIS technology and discover patterns and trends through spatial data
  • Conduct use-case analysis of business functions to establish GIS application requirements and geospatial data model requirements
  • Conduct in-house training for approved GIS tools to end users
  • Troubleshoot performance and accuracy issues with spatial data and applications
  • Integrate various information sources through geo-rectify maps, charts, and other forms of information
  • Support the Integration of approved GIS tools and data with other business applications
  • Export data in multiple formats as needed
  • Generate reports for various stakeholders
  • Work closely with end users to identify GIS requirements, technical issues, and training needs
  • Review current data and GIS processing techniques and update as needed
  • Troubleshoot and resolve GIS application problems
  • Communicate with internal and external technical resources to resolve end-user issues
  • Provide guidance to end users on methods to resolve problems or address GIS related issues
  • Author and publish information layers with intuitive fields, scale dependencies, and symbology
  • Additional IT related duties as needed/assigned


Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Associate or bachelor's degree in a related field (GIS, Computer Science) or equivalent combination of education and technical experience in GIS. In-depth knowledge of spatial data, GIS technology and standards.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.


Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.


Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-50 pounds).


Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.


Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as temperature extremes.
