Position Summary
While working as our Signage Field Superintendent, you will be responsible for overseeing the successful field execution of commercial signage projects from site survey through final installation and punch completion. This position serves as a working field leader responsible for planning and coordinating jobsite activities, leading company installation crews and subcontractors, communicating with General Contractors and other site stakeholders, and ensuring projects are completed safely, accurately, on schedule, and to Strategic Factory standards.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who can effectively plan the site, manage the site, inspect the work, identify issues before they become problems, and remain accountable for the overall field result.
Location: field work throughout Greater Baltimore/DC Metro area and occasional out-of-town projects
Hours: Hours vary by job/project; ability to work overtime is a must.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Site Surveys and Pre-Installation Planning
- Conduct detailed site surveys, including measurements, photographs, existing conditions, access, mounting substrates, power, roof and wall conditions, staging areas, and other site constraints.
- Identify conflicts between drawings, tenant criteria, and actual field conditions and recommend practical solutions before fabrication or mobilization.
- Confirm crane and lift access, parking, after-hours work requirements, protection requirements, and General Contractor logistics.
- Prepare clear and thorough survey notes that provide Design, Estimating, Fabrication, and Project Management with the information needed to execute the project accurately.
- Identify potential permitting, engineering, utility, structural, or installation concerns during the planning process.
Field Leadership and Crew/Subcontractor Oversight
- Lead company installation crews and oversee subcontracted installers performing work involving channel letters, cabinets, monument and pylon signs, dimensional letters, interior and exterior graphics, and related architectural elements.
- Assign daily work, establish priorities and targets, and monitor progress to ensure quality and productivity remain on track.
- Provide direction and hands-on support to installation crews when necessary to keep projects moving.
- Hold subcontractors accountable to Strategic Factory's safety, workmanship, scheduling, and documentation standards.
- Verify subcontractor manpower, equipment, insurance, and compliance requirements as directed.
- Address performance or workmanship concerns promptly and stop work when safety or quality standards are not being met.
- Coordinate materials, equipment, tools, and deliveries to ensure crews have what they need to complete scheduled work.
General Contractor and Stakeholder Communication
- Serve as the primary field point of contact with General Contractors, site superintendents, safety personnel, property managers, inspectors, customers, and other project stakeholders.
- Attend pre-construction, coordination, progress, and punch meetings as required.
- Communicate project constraints, progress, delays, and field conditions clearly and proactively.
- Identify access, site readiness, power, sequencing, and scheduling issues early and recommend solutions to keep projects moving.
- Maintain a professional and customer-focused presence on occupied and active construction sites.
- Ensure jobsites are maintained in a clean, organized, and professional condition throughout and upon completion of work.
Quality, Safety, and Project Closeout
- Enforce OSHA requirements and Strategic Factory safety standards related to working at heights, aerial lifts, electrical work, traffic control, PPE, and protection of customer property.
- Inspect work throughout the installation process and upon completion to ensure compliance with drawings, shop tickets, specifications, and company quality standards.
- Identify and correct quality issues before the project reaches final inspection or the customer.
- Complete required project documentation, including photographs, daily reports, timesheets, extra-work tickets, punch lists, and as-built information.
- Maintain accurate documentation so the project file clearly reflects field activity, changes, issues, and completion status.
- Own the punch-list and callback process and take appropriate steps to prevent repeat visits caused by incomplete or improperly executed work.
- Ensure completed installations are ready for inspection, customer turnover, and final project closeout.
Coordination with Shop and Office
- Work closely with Project Management, Design, Estimating, and Fabrication to ensure shop-fabricated materials are consistent with field conditions and installation requirements.
- Communicate drawing, engineering, permitting, material, or fabrication concerns before they result in delays or rework.
- Coordinate and support utility locates, footings and concrete work, electrical connections, inspections, and other site requirements as needed.
- Provide field feedback to the office and shop to improve future project planning, fabrication, and installation processes.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum of 5 years of experience installing commercial signage, including at least 3 years of experience leading field crews or working as a Superintendent, Senior Foreman, or similar field leadership role.
- Proven experience overseeing subcontracted installers in addition to internal installation crews.
- Demonstrated experience conducting detailed site surveys and translating field conditions into clear, actionable information.
- Experience working directly with General Contractors and other stakeholders on active commercial construction sites.
- Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, architectural plans, installation details, and project specifications.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record; ability to obtain a CDL if not already held.
- Comfortable working at heights and supervising boom lift, bucket truck, and other aerial equipment operations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with crews, subcontractors, General Contractors, customers, and internal teams.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple active projects and changing field conditions.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, climb, stand, bend, and perform hands-on installation work when required.
Preferred
- 3M Certified Installer certification or willingness to obtain certification.
- Electrical experience related to illuminated signage.
- Welding experience.
- Crane, boom lift, or NCCCO certification.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Class A or Class B CDL.
- Experience with sign footings, structural mounting systems, municipal inspections, and occupied-building installations.
- Familiarity with aluminum, ACM/Di bond, acrylic, vinyl, LED illumination, and related signage materials and components.
