Legal Aid of West Virginia (LAWV) is seeking a passionate and dedicated person to join our team as a Family Advocacy, Support, and Training (FAST) Education Advocate. This position provides regional coverage based out of our Charleston office.

Position Summary
The Family Advocacy, Support, and Training (FAST) Education Advocate will provide direct representation, advice, brief services, outreach, and community education primarily to parents or legal guardians of children who receive special education services and are experiencing challenges with school. The Education Advocate will work closely with FAST Attorneys, community partners, and advocacy organizations to ensure children and families receive comprehensive assistance to meet their educational needs.
The Education Advocate’s work will include:
- Providing advocacy on educational issues that directly impact the child’s academic stability and success.
- Navigating families through the educational system and accessing appropriate resources to meet their child’s educational needs.
- Informing parents of their child’s educational rights and ensuring access to appropriate special educational services.
- Assisting families in negotiating and resolving disputes with the school district.
- Addressing school administration’s failure to comply with state and federal code.
- Facilitating trainings and presentations on special education law to families and professionals.
- Offering informative workshops and creating legal resources (i.e. fact sheets, brochures, guides) for parents or community members.
- Representing families in matters consistent with funding requirements, office needs, and organizational priorities.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree level of education is required.
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting children and families.
- Previous experience advocating for students or children with disabilities is preferred.
- Knowledge of federal and state special education and civil rights laws is preferred.
- Knowledge of special education programs such as IEP’s, 504 plans, and academic supports is preferred.
- Excellent advocacy skills and the ability to form collaborative relationships.
- Strong written and oral advocacy skills.
- Ability to manage a diverse caseload while meeting deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively with clients from varied backgrounds and experiences.
