Work Schedule:
Academic schedule (approximately 35 weeks a year), with shifts available on an as-needed basis to cover staffing gaps, often on short notice. Most shifts will be overnight, from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM, with occasional day, evening, or weekend coverage needs. This position is part of a per diem nursing pool; regularly scheduled hours are not guaranteed.
Job Purpose:
Provide generally low-acuity overnight care focused on observation and supportive nursing care for students recovering from illness or recent hospital discharge, including those awaiting family pickup. Common needs include monitoring and care for communicable illnesses, fever, or gastrointestinal symptoms. The Health and Wellness Center is licensed for a maximum of four overnight patients. The overnight nurse works independently as the sole nurse on site, with access to an on-call nurse practitioner or physician through the Director of Health Services or Medical Director.
Ensure the health and wellness of all students by providing exceptional customer service, care, and comprehensive health services that invoke a positive experience for students, parents and the Pomfret School community.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assess, triage, and appropriately treat students who may be ill, injured or psychologically compromised
- Document and communicate the diagnosis and/or treatment plan with the nursing team, parents, advisors and other community members* as needed
- Consult with physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists and/or other health care providers as necessary
- Manage medications, as prescribed and ordered by clinicians, in a safe and controlled environment
- Dispense medications to students according to Connecticut Nurses Practice Act
- Assess and monitor students with suspected substance use or intoxication, perform urine drug screening as indicated, and coordinate further evaluation or care in accordance with School protocols
- Maintain student health records as necessary
- Inform, educate, and counsel students and community on health and wellness
- Assist with public passenger endorsement (PPE) physicals and screening for faculty members
- Support Director of Health Services with vitals, point of care, testing, and appointment booking
- Must adhere to all School policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook
- Continually meet or exceed Pomfret School’s Standards of Behavior, Character, and Engagement
- Perform other duties as assigned
*Other community members include but are not limited to faculty, staff, advisors, coaches, athletic trainers, etc.
- Connecticut RN licensure
- BLS certification required
- Familiarity with Magnus Health software is a plus
- Continually seek professional development, training and education
- Possess a current physical exam, TB test and are free of communicable diseases, as required by CT state law
