Hospice of the Piedmont is seeking a Bereavement Counselor to walk alongside individuals, families, and our community as they navigate loss. In this meaningful role, you’ll provide counseling, facilitate grief groups and workshops, offer community education, and create supportive spaces where people feel heard, understood, and less alone.
This is primarily an in-office role based in our Culpeper office, with occasional travel to Charlottesville.
Responsibilities:
- Provides clinical assessment, counseling and support desired by bereaved family members.
- Facilitates bereavement groups/workshops.
- Provides bereavement outreach to facilities by offering education on issues of death, loss, and grief and/or supportive counseling services (individual or group) to facility residents and/or staff.
- Participates in planning/coordinating of annual memorial services.
- Demonstrates and applies knowledge of emotional, social, and spiritual needs and responses to death and grief.
- Demonstrates and applies knowledge of factors that indicate complicated grief and high survivor risk.
- Maintains and updates knowledge of community resources.
- Prepares documentation for the clinical records per HOP standards.
- Participates in agency and community programs to enhance education on issues of death, loss, and grief.
- Participates in IDG and staff, department and other meetings as appropriate.
- Maintains quality and productivity standards and participates in the measurement of these standards.
- Provides community mailings of HOP information, bereavement letters, and notices.
- Participates in providing support to HOP staff and volunteers related to personal and professional grief and loss issues.
- Adheres to practice of confidentiality regarding patient, families, staff, and the organization.
Essential Skills for Success:
- Strong assessment abilities in counseling, interviewing, and communication.
- Deep understanding of counseling approaches.
- Knowledge of group dynamics and the grief process.
- Intermediate proficiency in word processing software.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in social work, counseling, or related field.
- A minimum of one year’s experience, preferably in working with grief and loss.
- Clinical experience with individuals, groups, and families.
- Available evening hours to meet client needs.
- Driver’s license, personal automobile and current automobile liability insurance.
Typical Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
- Work may occur in office or community settings
- Verbal and written communication skills, including ability to use phone and computer efficiently
- Local and regional travel and work hours that will extend into the evenings and weekends when necessary
- Prolonged screen-focused duties in a stationary position
- Lifting up to 20 pounds
