About Beep
Beep designs and operates autonomous shuttle systems that move people safely and efficiently through communities, campuses, and cities. Our on-site teams keep every deployment running: vehicles ready, riders safe, and service on schedule.
Position Summary
The Autonomous Fleet Operations Lead is the senior technical presence at a Beep autonomous shuttle deployment. The core of the role is keeping the electric, sensor-equipped fleet safe, charged, and available: performing inspections, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and first-line repairs, and working with Beep’s remote operations and engineering teams on anything beyond site capability. The Lead also supervises the site’s shuttle attendants during their shift and steps in as the on-board attendant when service requires. This person is accountable for fleet readiness, safe operation, and a reliable rider experience every day the shuttles run.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance & Diagnostics (primary focus)
• Perform daily pre-service and post-service inspections on every vehicle: tires, brakes, steering, suspension, lights, doors, wheelchair ramp, safety equipment, and body condition.
• Carry out the preventive maintenance schedule on time and keep each vehicle’s service history complete and accurate.
• Diagnose faults using scan tools, diagnostic software, fault codes, and vehicle data logs; identify root causes rather than repeating symptom fixes.
• Perform first-line repairs and component replacement within the scope of training, including brakes, tires, wipers, filters, 12V electrical, lighting, door and ramp mechanisms, and body components.
• Inspect, clean, and verify the condition and alignment of sensors, cameras, and LiDAR in line with Beep procedures; report anomalies to remote operations and engineering and follow their guidance on any recalibration.
• Manage battery and charging operations: connect and monitor charging, track state of charge and battery health, and plan charging around service hours.
• Apply vehicle software and firmware updates as directed by Beep engineering, and confirm the vehicle is fit for service afterward.
• Work safely on high-voltage systems, following lockout/tagout, PPE, and de-energization procedures at all times.
• Release vehicles to service only after required checks are complete; remove any vehicle from service that does not meet safety standards.
• Coordinate repairs, warranty claims, and parts orders with Beep technical support and outside vendors; maintain parts, tool, and supply inventory.
• Keep the maintenance and charging area organized, safe, and compliant with company and regulatory requirements.
Supervision & Site Operations
• Lead each shift: brief attendants at the start of service, assign vehicles and positions, and confirm fleet readiness before launch.
• Coach and train attendants on safety procedures, daily vehicle checks, and rider service; provide feedback and input to performance reviews.
• Help build and adjust schedules to cover service hours, and arrange coverage for absences.
• Serve as the day-to-day contact for the host customer or site partner, reporting on vehicle availability, service performance, and issues.
• Document and report incidents, near misses, and service disruptions promptly and accurately; support investigations and corrective actions.
• Track key metrics such as vehicle availability, maintenance completion, on-time service, and ridership, and recommend improvements.
Shuttle Attendant & Rider Experience
• Serve as the on-board attendant when needed: greet and assist riders, explain how the autonomous shuttle works, and answer questions professionally.
• Monitor the vehicle, route, and surroundings; follow Beep’s safety protocols, including taking manual control or engaging the emergency stop when required.
• Assist riders with mobility needs, including operating the wheelchair ramp and securing mobility devices, in line with ADA requirements.
Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate or associate degree in automotive, diesel, electric vehicle, or related technology preferred.
• At least 3 years of hands-on experience in vehicle or fleet maintenance, with experience servicing electric or hybrid vehicles strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to diagnose electrical, mechanical, and software-related faults using diagnostic tools and technical documentation.
• High-voltage safety training, or willingness to complete Beep’s training before working on high-voltage systems.
• At least 1 year of experience leading, training, or supervising others, or clear demonstrated leadership aptitude.
• Professional, friendly manner with riders, customers, and coworkers.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, and the ability to meet Beep’s and its insurer’s driver requirements.
• Ability to pass a background check and drug screen.
• Comfortable with tablets, diagnostic software, and digital maintenance logs; strong written and verbal communication.
• Willingness to complete Beep’s training on autonomous vehicle operation and emergency procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
• ASE certification (such as Electrical/Electronic Systems, Brakes, or Light Vehicle Hybrid/EV Specialist L3) or manufacturer EV certification.
• Experience with autonomous vehicles, robotics, sensor systems, or transit fleet operations.
• Experience with fleet maintenance software and preventive maintenance tracking.
• CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Bilingual skills (English and Spanish).
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
• Regularly stands, walks, bends, kneels, and works under or around vehicles; frequently enters and exits the vehicle.
• Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
• Works in a shop or charging area and outdoors in all weather, including heat, rain, and cold, with exposure to noise and traffic.
• Able to work early, late, weekend, and holiday shifts as service requires.
Compensation & Benefits
This role offers a competitive hourly wage within the range listed above, along with Beep’s standard benefits package (medical/dental/vision, paid time off, and 401(k)). Final pay will be based on experience, certifications, internal equity, and market benchmarking.
