Job Summary:
The Senior Accountant is responsible for assisting the Accounting Manager with the daily operations of EPU’s accounting functions. Working under general supervision, the Senior Accountant performs complex accounting duties, including maintenance and analysis of accounting records and systems; preparation and review of accounting schedules, reports, and financial statements; and ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and the organization's policies, procedures, and contracts. The Senior Accountant also provides training and support for newly hired and current staff.
Essential Functions:
- Works directly with agency program Directors and Managers to assist in developing budgets, monitoring grant expenditure, and preparing necessary budget modifications and reports.
- Assist in the annual profit-sharing plan accounting, and reporting.
- Review or prepare quarterly Sales Tax return and annual Business Property Tax returns.
- Implement system of internal controls over accounting functions to minimize risk.
- Assist the Accounting Manager and CFO in developing accounting policies and procedures and maintaining the Accounting Policy & Procedures Manual
- Review or prepare grant invoices monthly.
- Works with the Development and Communications staff to ensure donations are recorded properly in both the Grant Accounting software and the general ledger.
- Assist external auditors and provide required information for audits, including the annual Agency Single Audit.
- Manage the monthly closing process and assist the Accounting Manager and CFO with preparing monthly reports.
- Review or prepare journal entries and reconcile general ledger accounts.
- In the absence of the Accounting Manager, provide support as needed, monitor cash balances, accounts payable checks and deposits.
- Comply with HIPAA requirements, be familiar with EPU’s policies and procedures, and maintain proper confidentiality.
- Adhere to EPU standards, policies, and procedures.
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license according to California Department of Motor Vehicle standards and abide by all Federal, State and Local laws associated with driving a vehicle.
- Follow all EPU’s health and safety policies and procedures, using universal precautions.
- Position requires the ability to travel as needed, both to local and out-of-area locations.
- The EPU facility's standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- This salaried exempt position requires availability during EPU's regular business hours to collaborate with organizational leaders and fulfill position responsibilities. The incumbent is expected to work the time necessary to meet organizational needs, including supporting major EPU fundraising events and activities that may occur outside of normal business hours.
- Must perform other duties as they are assigned by the Accounting Manager, Chief Financial Officer or President/Chief Executive Officer.
Knowledge, Skill, and Experience:
Education: Requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field.
Skills: Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating across departments. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and adherence to deadlines. Demonstrated integrity and commitment to ethical accounting practices. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information.
Experience:
- 5+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit accounting and grant management.
- Experience with fund accounting, GAAP, and Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) for managing federal grants. Proficiency working with QuickBooks or comparable accounting software, Adobe Pro, and Microsoft Office products.
- 2+ years’ experience in cost allocation, financial reporting, and grant compliance requirements.
- 2+ years’ experience in designing and analyzing Excel spreadsheets.
- Must hold a valid California Driver's license and good driving record with no serious violations for the previous two-year period and be able to provide proof of current automobile liability insurance.
Physical Demands:
Typical Working Conditions: Position works the majority of the time at the EPU facility. The position requires the ability to sit and work on a computer for extensive periods. Position requires fingering (fine dexterity), repetitive hand and wrist motions.
Equipment Used: Computers, printers, telephones, and other various office equipment. Requires operation of a vehicle for local travel on occasion.
Essential Physical Tasks: Must be able to sit for long periods, working with a keyboard and computer screen.
