Workover Solutions is seeking an experienced QA/QC - Quality Inspector / Machinist for its Imperial, Pennsylvania facility. This hands-on position supports machining, repair, and assembly operations by verifying that components conform to engineering drawings, work-order requirements, applicable specifications, and company quality procedures.
The successful candidate will have practical machining experience combined with strong inspection and documentation skills. This person must be capable of recognizing machining problems, inspecting complex features, maintaining material traceability, documenting nonconformances, and communicating findings clearly to machinists and shop leadership.
This is primarily a shop-floor quality role—The employee may perform limited machining, rework, or verification operations when required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform receiving, first-piece, in-process, and final inspections of machined and repaired components.
- Inspect parts for conformance to engineering drawings, work orders, dimensional tolerances, surface-finish requirements, and applicable customer specifications.
- Use micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, depth micrometers, height gauges, indicators, thread gauges, optical comparators, surface-finish comparators, and other applicable inspection equipment.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, revision levels, machining symbols, and inspection requirements.
- Verify internal and external threads using applicable plug, ring, pitch-diameter, lead, taper, and profile inspection methods.
- Inspect downhole tool components during make-up, break-down, repair, and rework activities.
- Confirm that the correct material, drawing revision, work order, inspection plan, and acceptance criteria are being used before accepting product.
- Monitor manufacturing and inspection processes to identify dimensional drift, tool wear, setup problems, surface-finish defects, or other conditions that may affect product quality.
- Conduct product and process inspections to evaluate quality and performance, consistent with the company’s established shop responsibilities.
- Verify that machinists and operators complete required in-process checks and inspection records.
- Review completed travelers, inspection reports, material certifications, heat-treatment records, and traceability documentation for accuracy and completeness.
- Maintain positive identification and traceability of raw material, work-in-process, repair components, and finished products.
- Identify, segregate, and document nonconforming material or product to prevent unintended use.
- Initiate nonconformance reports and provide accurate measurements, photographs, and supporting information for review.
- Verify completed rework before releasing components to the next operation.
- Assist with root-cause investigations and corrective actions by providing inspection data and practical machining input.
- Provide timely feedback to machinists and the Shop Manager regarding dimensional trends, recurring defects, tooling problems, and process concerns.
- Ensure inspection and reporting requirements are completed accurately and on time.
- Verify that measuring and test equipment is within its calibration period before use.
- Maintain inspection equipment in clean, serviceable condition and report damaged, inaccurate, or overdue equipment.
- Support calibration tracking, gauge-control activities, and periodic verification of shop-floor measuring equipment.
- Maintain compliance with applicable ISO and API QHSE requirements, approved work methods, and company procedures.
- Ensure work complies with applicable local, state, and federal regulations and company and industry standards.
- Promote a culture of superior service quality and workmanship throughout shop operations.
- Maintain an organized inspection area and perform other duties assigned by management.
Machining Support Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual lathes, mills, drill presses, or related equipment when inspection verification, controlled rework, or machining support is required.
- Evaluate whether a nonconforming feature can be safely reworked while preserving drawing requirements and remaining machining allowance.
- Recommend practical rework methods to shop leadership; do not perform unauthorized rework or alter acceptance requirements.
- Use indicators and accepted shop practices to align and verify workpieces, fixtures, and tooling.
- Recognize common machining defects, including chatter, taper, bell-mouth, out-of-roundness, poor concentricity, burrs, damaged threads, incorrect surface finish, and distortion.
- Stop or place work on hold when continued processing could produce additional nonconforming parts.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Practical experience as a machinist, machining inspector, quality technician, or similar manufacturing position.
- Hands-on experience inspecting turned, bored, milled, drilled, and threaded features.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and revision information.
- Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Proficiency using standard precision measuring instruments and fixed-limit gauges.
- Ability to inspect work independently and accurately document actual measurement results.
- Ability to distinguish normal process variation from tool wear, setup error, equipment problems, or operator error.
- Working knowledge of material identification, lot control, and manufacturing traceability.
- Ability to communicate nonconformances professionally and objectively using documented requirements and inspection results.
- Ability to maintain accurate inspection, calibration, and quality records.
- Basic computer skills for entering inspection results and completing electronic quality documentation.
- Reliable attendance and the ability to work safely with limited supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience inspecting oilfield, workover, drilling, or downhole tool components.
- Experience with API thread forms, rotary-shouldered connections, or other oilfield-related threads.
- Experience with ISO 9001, API Spec Q1, or comparable manufacturing quality-management systems.
- Experience inspecting repaired or previously used components where wear, damage, and remaining material must be evaluated.
- Working knowledge of manual lathe and mill setup and operation.
- Experience with CMMs, optical comparators, profilometers, hardness testers, or portable surface-measurement equipment.
- Experience preparing nonconformance reports and supporting root-cause and corrective-action investigations.
- Familiarity with calibration systems and measurement-system control.
- Experience machining and inspecting alloy steels, heat-treated materials, stainless steels, and other difficult-to-machine materials.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of machining processes and the relationship between workholding, tooling, machine condition, and dimensional results.
- Sound judgment regarding inspection methods, gauge selection, measurement repeatability, and environmental influences.
- Attention to detail without unnecessarily interrupting production for conditions that remain within documented acceptance criteria.
- Ability to prioritize critical inspections while supporting production schedules.
- Ability to communicate effectively with machinists, operators, supervisors, engineering personnel, and management.
- Willingness to challenge questionable results, drawing conflicts, or undocumented acceptance decisions before product is released.
Work Environment
- Full-time, shop-based position at the Imperial, Pennsylvania facility.
- Regular exposure to machine tools, cutting fluids, metal chips, lifting equipment, noise, and normal industrial shop conditions.
- Requires the use of applicable personal protective equipment.
- May require standing for extended periods and safely lifting, positioning, or inspecting machined components with appropriate material-handling equipment.
- Schedule, overtime expectations, compensation, and benefits will be communicated during the hiring process.
