Forward Deployed AI Engineer (Chicago based)
Hybrid Remote • Remote Worker - N/A
Description

We’re looking for our next bold leader – a Forward Deployed AI Engineer (Chicago based) – to join our quest to provide market-transforming solutions for businesses, care teams and consumers to interactively manage health and care.

At Medecision, you’ll have the chance to work with people that have incredible intellect, who are hard-wired for problem-solving. You’ll also know that you’re making a real difference, and not just in some abstract, corporate-mission-statement kind of way. We’re working with companies that touch millions of lives every day, maybe even saving a few along the way. Each person contributes uniquely to our mission and our ability to raise the level of experience we provide to all our customers and colleagues. The role of Forward Deployed AI Engineer is no different, and in fact, plays a key role in our journey to innovate solutions that solve real problems for our clients.

What We’re Looking For

Medecision is seeking a hands-on Forward Deployed Engineer to own the technical delivery of AI agent deployments for our health plan and risk-bearing provider customers. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, customer delivery, and product. You will embed with customer teams to understand real care management, utilization management, quality, and pharmacy workflows, then build, launch, and operate production AI agents on the Medecision platform. The ideal candidate is a strong software engineer who thrives in customer environments, understands how health plan operations work, and holds a high bar for safety, privacy, and reliability when working with member data. This is a high-ownership role. You will partner closely with Solution Consulting, Product, Clinical, and Engineering teams, and your field insight will directly shape how the platform evolves. This role will be embed onsite with a health plan customer in the Chicago, IL area.

Reports to: SVP, Forward Deployed Engineering

Location: Remote (Chicago, IL area with travel up to 50% a month)

Requirements

What You’ll Do

Customer Deployment and Delivery:

  • Serve as the technical owner for customer AI deployments from discovery through production go-live, including scoping, architecture, build, testing, cutover, and post-launch support.
  • Embed with customer clinical, operational, and IT stakeholders to map care management, utilization management, quality, and pharmacy workflows and translate them into agent designs that ship.
  • Build proofs of concept and MVPs that move from idea to deployable in days, then harden them for production.
  • Integrate agents with incumbent customer systems, including existing care management and utilization management platforms, claims and eligibility data, EHRs, and data warehouses, so customers gain agentic value without replacing what they already run.
  • Partner with Solution Consulting and Sales on technical discovery, demos, and pilot design, and help convert successful pilots into production programs.
  • Leave customer teams more capable after each engagement through enablement, documentation, and knowledge transfer.

AI Agent Engineering:

  • Design and implement agent intelligence on the Medecision platform, including prompts, reasoning, retrieval-augmented generation grounded in customer clinical and plan data, tool calling, and MCP integrations.
  • Build human-in-the-loop workflows that keep clinicians and reviewers in control of decisions, especially in utilization management and prior authorization.
  • Develop evaluation frameworks, including LLM-as-judge, golden test sets, and clinical review loops, to measure accuracy, safety, and consistency before and after launch.
  • Write production-quality code in Python and TypeScript, using AI-assisted development tools within approved Medecision guardrails.
  • Build reusable patterns, templates, and connectors that make each future deployment faster and more predictable.

Production Operations, Security, and Compliance:

  • Own reliability for deployed agents, including monitoring, alerting, logging, incident response, and continuous performance tuning.
  • Build and maintain dashboards that track agent health and customer outcomes such as review turnaround time, reviewer throughput, gap closure, and hours returned to care teams.
  • Handle Protected Health Information to the minimum necessary standard and follow HIPAA and HITRUST controls, including audit logging, least-privilege access, and secrets management on Google Cloud Platform.
  • Ship all changes through GitLab merge requests and CI/CD pipelines with peer review, and support AI governance processes, including Responsible AI review.
  • Support healthcare interoperability requirements, including FHIR and HL7 standards and current CMS interoperability and prior authorization rules.
  • Surface platform gaps, edge cases, and field insights to Product and Engineering to inform the roadmap.
  • Follow and comply with all security policies and procedures established by the organization, including adherence to HIPAA and HITRUST regulations.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employers in the US. This position does not offer sponsorship for employment visas.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Relevant professional certifications are a plus, such as: Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect, Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer, HealthCare Information Security and Privacy Practitioner (HCISPP)
  • Strong Python proficiency with experience integrations solutions into enterprise systems.
  • Experience as software engineer, including experience in a client-facing, embedded, or forward-deployed delivery role.
  • Hands-on experience building with large language models in production, including retrieval-augmented generation, prompt engineering, tool calling, and evaluation.
  • Experience with LLM and agent frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, LangSmith, or Model Context Protocol (MCP)
  • Experience integration with APIs, databases, and enterprise systems, with comfort in asynchronous patterns, error handling, and reliability engineering.
  • Healthcare technology experience is highly preferred, especially with health plans, care management, utilization management or prior authorization.
  • Familiarity with healthcare data standards such as FHIR, HL7, and X12, and with claims and eligibility data.
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform, containerized deployments, and CI/CD pipelines (GitLab preferred)
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to clinical, operational, and executive audiences.
  • Demonstrated end-to-end delivery ownership in client-embedded environment
  • High ownership and bias for action; comfortable operating with autonomy in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Willingness and ability to work onsite at a client location in the Chicago, IL area, with additional travel as needed.
