Reports To: Field Engineer / Project Engineer / Project Manager

Location: Issaquah, WA and other potential west coast + California job sites

Eligibility: Rising Sophomores and Juniors currently enrolled in an accredited Civil Engineering program.

Why You'll Love This Role

  • Genuinely hands-on — you'll be on active jobsites helping run real production, not just shadowing.
  • Learn industry-leading tools: HeavyJob, Autodesk Forma, and Smartsheet.
  • 1:1 mentorship from Field Engineers, Project Engineers, and Project Managers.
  • A front-row seat to how structural steel and other projects are built, start to finish.
  • Strong potential path to a full-time Field Engineer I offer, after graduation.
  • Competitive pay: $25.00 - $30.00 hour, plus [housing/travel stipend if applicable].

What You'll Do

  • Help oversee steel erection activities alongside field engineers, project engineers, project managers, and field supervision team.
  • Join daily crew meetings to track the production schedule and confirm materials and equipment are ready.
  • Help review shop drawings, specifications, and project data to support quality and compliance.
  • Support the team in spotting risks to schedule, budget, materials, or process.
  • Complete daily work plans and production planners.
  • Help track production, schedule, and budget performance, and log daily activity in HeavyJob and Autodesk Forma.
  • Support schedule updates in Smartsheet (or other approved tools).
  • Help keep quantity input and cost coding accurate for project financials.
  • Support the Project Manager with status reports and incident documentation as needed.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, engineers, and field supervisors.
  • Support quality control and assurance reviews, inspections, and documentation throughout the project.
  • Help plan and complete field layout alongside crews and engineering.
  • Get exposure to erection plans, submittals, and design drawing development.
  • Help reconcile the closeout checklist with the owner's representative and field crews.
  • Learn what it means to put safety and quality first on every jobsite.
  • As opportunities come up, get exposure to estimating — schedules, quantity takeoffs, and proposal review.

What Your Internship Looks Like

  • Weeks 1–2: Onboarding — learn the tools (HeavyJob, Forma, Smartsheet, and more), safety protocols, and how a steel erection crew runs day to day.
  • Ongoing: work alongside a Field Engineer on live production tracking, shop drawing review, and field layout — real tasks with real stakes, not busy work.
  • By the end: Walk away with a portfolio of real project experience, a mentor network, and — for strong performers — a conversation about a full-time Field Engineer I role.

Good to Know

  • You’ll be on active jobsites – expect time on your feet, uneven terrain, climbing, and all-weather conditions, with PPE always required.
  • Travel to project sites across the Western United States including Alaska may be required, with extended stays as needed.
  • KWH promotes a safe and healthy work environment and provides appropriate safety and equipment training for all personnel as required.

Job Type

  • Full-time (summer), non-exempt.

  • Curious, eager to learn, and not afraid to ask questions on a jobsite.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and a clear communicator.
