Puyallup Tribal Health Authority (PTHA) is seeking to connect with qualified physicians interested in serving as contract preceptors for our Family Medicine Residency Program.
This posting is intended to maintain an ongoing pool of interested physicians for current and future precepting opportunities. Contract assignments will depend on program needs, physician availability, qualifications, and mutually agreed-upon terms.
Our residency program supports the development of knowledgeable, compassionate family physicians prepared to provide high-quality, community-based care. We welcome physicians who enjoy teaching, mentoring, and supporting the next generation of healthcare providers while delivering culturally responsive, patient-centered care.
Position Summary:
The Contract Physician Preceptor provides clinical supervision, education, and mentorship to Family Medicine residents. Through hands-on instruction, clinical guidance, constructive feedback, and role modeling, the preceptor supports residents in developing their clinical knowledge, decision-making, documentation, and patient care skills.
Preceptors may support comprehensive family medicine, preventive care, acute and chronic disease management, and prenatal obstetric care. Experience or willingness to supervise residents during prenatal visits is required; active labor and delivery services are not required. Additional opportunities may include osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) and substance use disorder treatment, depending on the physician’s expertise, clinical privileges, and program needs.
The preceptor collaborates with residency leadership and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to support resident progress, patient safety, and quality care in alignment with PTHA’s mission and residency program requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide clinical supervision appropriate to each resident’s level of training, demonstrated competency, and applicable supervision requirements.
- Teach and mentor residents in clinical reasoning, assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, preventive care, and management of acute and chronic conditions.
- Supervise and educate residents during prenatal obstetric visits.
- Model respectful, compassionate, culturally responsive, and patient-centered healthcare practices.
- Observe resident performance and provide timely, constructive feedback on clinical skills, decision-making, and documentation.
- Review and attest to resident clinical notes within 72 hours of the patient encounter.
- Communicate with residency leadership regarding resident progress, learning opportunities, and performance concerns.
- Support patient safety, evidence-based practice, ethical decision-making, and effective collaboration across the care team.
- Contribute to additional clinical teaching and educational activities as appropriate to the contracted assignment.
Contract Arrangement:
This is a contract opportunity, not a regular employee position. Contract physicians are not eligible for PTHA employee benefits. The scope of services, scheduling, compensation, and other contractual terms will be discussed with qualified candidates based on program needs and mutual agreement. Submitting an application expresses interest in potential contract opportunities and does not guarantee an assignment or a specific amount of work.
