Machine Operator
Description

Job Summary:

The Foam Cushion Compressor & Cutting Machine Operator is responsible for safely setting up, operating, and monitoring both pneumatic/hydraulic/vacuum foam compression equipment and precision foam cutting machinery (such as vertical, horizontal, or contour cutters). This role involves sizing, shaping, compressing, and inserting polyfoam or polyurethane foam cushions into fabric/leather covers or protective packaging, ensuring smooth continuous workflow, precise alignment, product quality compliance, and strict adherence to safety standards.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and operate pneumatic, hydraulic, or vacuum foam compression machinery.
  • Adjust compression pressure, speed, vacuum suction, and machine settings based on cushion density, thickness, and material specifications.
  • Load raw foam cores/slabs into the compressor and insert them cleanly into cushion covers, inner liners, or protective packaging bags.
  • Safely release compression mechanisms, ensuring an even fill, proper corner alignment, and a smooth appearance without damaging outer covers or internal foam.
  • Set up, operate, and monitor foam cutting machines to slice foam blocks or sheets to exact dimensions using technical drawings, work orders, or templates with minimal material waste. Stage, organize, and haul foam blocks, pre-cut cushion slabs, and covers to keep the workstation efficiently supplied.
  • Assist in foam preparation, manual stuffing, or touch-up work when required.
  • Vacuum-pack compressed foam units or boxed cushions for optimized storage and transport.
  • Perform daily routine operator preventative maintenance (cleaning air lines, inspecting vacuum seals, greasing mechanical slides, checking safety guards, and maintaining cutting blades).
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free workstation, keeping the area clear of excess foam scrap and dust.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, air leaks, or unusual mechanical noises to maintenance and management immediately.
  • Strictly follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) safety procedures and operate all two-hand safety bottoms as designated.

Qualifications (Experience/Education):

  • 1–2+ years of experience in a manufacturing, assembly, furniture production, upholstery, foam fabrication, or packaging environment.
  • Prior experience operating compression machinery, stuffing equipment, hydraulic/pneumatic presses, or cutting machinery preferred.
  • Familiarity with different foam grades (e.g., polyurethane, high-resiliency, memory foam, fiber wraps).
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, schedule sheets, work sheets, specification sheets, and measurements using a tape measure, calipers, or gauges.
  • Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, and measurements).
