Engine Rebuild Technician Small or Large Bore (All Levels 1–4)
Description

Riggs Cat Power & Energy is hiring Engine Rebuild Technicians at every level, from Apprentice to Lead / Master, for small-bore and large-bore engines. You'll tear down, inspect, and rebuild industrial, compression, and power engines. Whether you're a recent diesel program grad or a ten-year rebuild lead, if you rebuild engines or want to learn, apply.

About The Role

This is precision, shop-based rebuild work, separate from our field-diagnostic Engine Tech role. We run two specializations on one career ladder, and techs can grow in either or both. All levels live the Riggs Way: Urgent. Selfless. Excellent.

Small bore: C7 through C32-class industrial and compression engines. High volume, fast turnaround, no comebacks. What matters most is throughput and consistency alongside precision.

Large bore: 3500 and 3600 series, including G3600 gas, across Tier 2, Tier 4, and Tier 4 DGB fleets. Heavy rigging, crank deflection checks, and DGB conversions. What matters most is safety on daily heavy lifts and integrity in every recorded measurement.

Levels and responsibilities

Level 1 — Apprentice (0–2 years; diesel grads, ex-military, on-highway, ag, heavy equipment, truck, auto, or aircraft mechanics)

  •  Teardown, cleaning, parts tagging, kitting and staging, turbo and accessory removal, and supervised measurements
  •  Large bore adds assisting with rigging, hoist moves, and 3600 teardowns
  •  Moves up after completing a verified in-frame or top-end overhaul with every measurement checked, and finishing AFA I

Level 2 — Technician II (2–5 years on heavy-duty or industrial engines: C4.4–C9 small bore; 3500-class or C27/C32 large bore)

  •  Independent top-end and in-frame overhauls, common rail and MUI fuel R&I, HP fuel pump inspection, turbo service, and bearing clearance and end play checks
  •  Small bore moves up with a low comeback rate over a sustained run plus AFA II
  •  Large bore moves up after a major overhaul and crank deflection check without rework, plus Oil & Gas 3500 Overhaul

Level 3 — Senior (5–10 years; knows common failure modes by sight)

  •  Complete major overhauls, failure analysis on comebacks, final QC sign-off, and training Levels 1–2
  •  Large bore adds crank deflection checks, T4 DGB conversions, outside machining coordination, and 3600/G3600 overhauls
  •  Moves up when ready to run a line and set standards

Level 4 — Lead / Master (10+ years of rebuild experience)

  •  Runs the rebuild line for their specialization (see below)

Lead / Master. Both Masters run their line, set standard work and checklists, make rework and warranty calls, work with the Dyno team on test failures, build the apprentice pipeline, and give corrective feedback that improves the work without damaging the team.

Small Bore Master

  •  Focus: quality and flow on a high-volume, fast-turn line
  •  Owns throughput, comeback rate, scheduling, and metrics
  •  Coaches techs to sign-off level and catches repeat errors
  •  Required training: full small-bore family training, AFA I & II, and strong fuel system diagnostics
  •  Communicates clearly with clients and management
  •  Typical background: shop foreman or reman line lead

Large Bore Master

  •  Focus: standards and judgment calls across 3500, 3600, and G3600
  •  Owns torque and measurement standards (including shop-wide crank deflection), job scoping and hour estimates, and repair vs. replace calls
  •  Leads 3600/G3600 major overhauls; the person the shop calls when a job goes sideways
  •  Required training: Oil & Gas 3500 Overhaul, AFA I & II, large-bore family training, and G3600 Master Mechanic (or within the first year)
  •  Handles client escalations and explains findings clients may not want to hear
  •  Typical background: former field tech or reman shop lead; GERP a plus
Requirements

What you bring

All levels

  •  Skill with precision tools (micrometers, dial indicators, torque wrenches), torque sequences, and OEM service manuals
  •  Shop and rigging safety habits, including pre-lift checks, plus contamination control
  •  Cat SIS 2.0 or a comparable system (John Deere Service ADVISOR, Cummins QuickServe/INSITE, Detroit DiagnosticLink, Jaltest, or Noregon JPRO)
  •  Organized parts handling and accurate job and measurement logging

By level

  •  Level 2+: Cat ET, scope of repair and parts reuse guidelines, and AFA I; small bore adds common rail and MUI troubleshooting, large bore adds T2 vs. T4 vs. T4 DGB cylinder head knowledge
  •  Level 3: AFA I & II and family training for your specialization; small bore adds strong fuel system diagnostics and coaching without friction, large bore adds Oil & Gas 3500 Overhaul and progress toward G3600 Master Mechanic
  •  Level 4: see the Master requirements above

Nice to have: ASE A1 Engine Repair or T2 Diesel Engines; prior support on 3600 or G3600 jobs

How you work

  •  Fast without cutting corners; "close enough" is never in spec
  •  Never guesses at a spec or signs off on unverified work
  •  Owns mistakes, catches them early, and takes junior techs' questions seriously
