The Systems Integration Engineer II is a hands-on technical role responsible for integrating separate hardware, software, and network components into a single, unified system for Fortem’s international customers outside U.S. business hours. This engineer ensures that TrueView radar sensors, SkyDome command-and-control software, DroneHunter interceptors, and customer-side network and security infrastructure operate together as one coherent, reliable system.
This position works the graveyard shift to provide real-time integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting support during international customer business hours and active deployment windows. The role also provides overnight coverage redundancy for Fortem’s technical support operations. The engineer must be highly self-sufficient, capable of diagnosing and resolving complex integration issues without reliance on daytime team availability, and disciplined about documenting work and handing off open items with full context.
The role begins with a structured training period on day shift, working alongside the Professional Services, Customer Success, and Engineering teams to build deep knowledge of Fortem products, customer environments, and integration standards before transitioning to overnight coverage.
Key Responsibilities
- Configure, integrate, and commission TrueView, SkyDome, and DroneHunter with customer networks, third-party sensors, and C2 systems, including support for site and factory acceptance testing.
- Support customer API integrations: validate endpoints, troubleshoot requests and responses, and assist customer developers and third-party integrators connecting to Fortem systems.
- Troubleshoot integration issues across hardware, software, and network layers, working from first principles when documentation does not cover the scenario; escalate with full documented context when issues exceed scope.
- Monitor integrated system health and alerts during overnight coverage windows; respond to alerts and drive issues to resolution or handoff.
- Provide backup overnight technical coverage alongside the existing night-shift team, ensuring support continuity through absences and turnover.
- Coordinate with on-site professional services and field deployment teams, customer IT staff, and third-party vendors to resolve configuration conflicts and connectivity issues across time zones.
- Use existing integration tooling and automation effectively and identify and recommend improvements through the established change process.
- Produce and maintain integration documentation, as-built configurations, network diagrams, runbooks, and knowledge base articles that the broader team depends on.
- Capture product, documentation, and process gaps identified during integration; feed findings and enhancement requests back to Engineering, QA, and Product Management.
- Collaborate asynchronously with the daytime team, providing thorough and actionable handoff notes on open cases, pending decisions, and scheduled work.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Network Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or an additional 4+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in systems integration, network engineering, technical deployment, or a related field.
- Proven ability to own integration tasks independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong working knowledge of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, subnetting, VLANs, routing, switching, firewall configuration, and secure remote connectivity.
- Strong working knowledge of Linux systems administration—comfortable at the command line diagnosing processes, services, file systems, and networking.
- Experience integrating and troubleshooting REST APIs and JSON payloads using Postman, curl, or similar tools.
- Working programming/scripting proficiency in Python, Bash, and/or C++ for diagnostics and for working with existing scripts, code, and tooling.
- Strong analytical and structured troubleshooting skills; able to isolate faults across hardware, software, and network layers.
- Track record of creating or significantly contributing to technical documentation, as-built records, and runbooks.
- Excellent asynchronous written communication; handoff notes and case documentation are thorough and actionable.
- Ability to work the graveyard shift on an ongoing basis.
- Export Control Requirement This position requires access to technology and technical data controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Applicants must be U.S. persons as defined by those regulations: U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, lawful permanent residents, asylees, or refugees.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with radar, RF, sensor, or video systems integration.
- Prior drone (UAV) experience.
- Experience with Docker and containerized application environments.
- Experience with monitoring and alerting tools and system health observability platforms.
- Familiarity with Confluence, Jira, SharePoint, or similar documentation and ticketing platforms.
- Industry certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Security+, CCNA, or Linux administration certifications.
- Additional language proficiency relevant to Fortem’s international customer base.
- FAA Part 107 certification.
- Experience in a defense, aerospace, or government technology environment, including DoD, DHS, or public-safety customers.
- Active security clearance or ability to obtain one when required.
