Position Overview
The CAD Designer / SolidWorks Drafter is responsible for translating customer concepts, sketches, drawings, or architectural renderings into highly accurate 3D models and comprehensive 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks. In this role, you will work directly with our proprietary aluminum extrusion profiles and Snap Tube structural systems to design custom exhibits, trade show booth layouts, and structural frames. Additionally, you will program laser and extrusion cutting equipment to prepare files directly for production. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented CAD specialist who thrives on solving mechanical design challenges, creating precise Bills of Materials (BOMs), and supporting shop floor manufacturing.
Direct Reporting: Operations / Engineering Manager
Essential Job Functions
- 3D CAD Modeling: Review customer drawings, concept renderings, or rough hand sketches to build accurate 3D assemblies and parts in SolidWorks using standard company aluminum extrusions and Snap Tube systems.
- Machine Programming & CAM/Nesting: Program laser cutting machines and extrusion cut-off equipment by converting SolidWorks models into machine files, optimizing cutting profiles, and minimizing material scrap.
- Customer Approval Packages: Prepare clear, professional 2D detail drawings and 3D views for customer presentation, engineering review, and final client sign-off.
- Production & Fabrication Drafting: Generate complete, production-ready fabrication drawings, cut lists, assembly diagrams, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) upon customer drawing approval.
- Trade Show & Exhibit Layouts: Assist with space planning, custom booth configurations, and structural frame design tailored to project and site constraints.
- Quality & Drawing Verification: Check drawings for proper dimensions, hardware callouts, structural integrity, tolerances, and strict compliance with company drafting standards prior to manufacturing release.
- Shop Floor Support: Collaborate directly with the production team to clarify drawing details, answer assembly questions, assist with test fits, and resolve shop floor inquiries.
- Project Tracking & File Management: Maintain organized SolidWorks PDM libraries and drawing files with strict version control; coordinate project updates and timelines between Sales, Operations, and Production.
Education & Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Education & Training: Associate Degree, Technical Certificate in CAD/Drafting, Mechanical Design Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience: 0–3+ years of practical CAD drafting/modeling experience in custom manufacturing, structural aluminum framing, fabrication, or display/exhibit environments.
- Software Proficiency: Strong, hands-on experience in SolidWorks (3D assembly design, weldments/structural member profiles, and 2D detail drawing creation).
- Technical Blueprint Reading: Proven ability to read, interpret, and translate 2D customer blueprints, hand sketches, and renderings into buildable 3D models.
- General Requirements: Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook). Available to work full-time on-site in Auburn Hills, MI.
Preferred Skills & Competencies:
- Machine Programming: Basic familiarity with laser cutting software, CNC cut saws, nesting software, or converting CAD geometry to CNC machine code.
- Extrusion Systems: Experience working with T-slot aluminum extrusions, tubular structural framing (Snap Tube), modular display hardware, or custom sheet metal/fabrication.
- Spatial Aptitude: Strong spatial visualization, mechanical logic, and practical understanding of assembly tolerances.
- Attention to Detail: High precision in creating cut lists and BOMs to minimize material waste and manufacturing rework.
- Cross-Functional Communication: Ability to effectively communicate design requirements across Sales, Project Management, and Shop Floor Personnel.
