Senior Software Engineer
Remote, Eastern time zone hours · Technology team
Direct supervisor: Chief Technology and AI Officer
About us
Children's Specialized ABA provides applied behavior analysis therapy to children with autism, in our clinics and in families' homes, across a growing number of states. We are building a technology team to take manual work out of how the company runs: connecting our core business systems, building internal applications and automations, using AI where it helps, and building a data platform the whole company reports from. We run on Microsoft and build on Azure.
About the role
We are looking for a senior engineer who works hand in hand with our business teams to design, build and run that software. The role covers the full stack, from cloud infrastructure and back-end services to AI pipelines and the front-end applications our staff use every day. Much of the data involved is protected health information, so security and HIPAA compliance are part of the job.
This is a hands-on building role on a small, new team. You will work directly with the Chief Technology and AI Officer and move between departments, such as recruiting, intake, authorizations, billing, HR and clinical operations, based on what is highest priority.
Examples of the work
• Integrations that connect our core business systems.
• AI pipelines that read documents and transcripts and turn them into structured data.
• Automated compliance checks.
• Internal tools that remove manual steps from intake, onboarding and other workflows.
What you will do
• Partner with department leaders and staff to understand their needs, workflows and pain points, and deliver solutions that solve them.
• Build AI-powered pipelines and tools that turn documents, transcripts and forms into structured data, and measure how accurate they are.
• Build and maintain back-end services and APIs on Azure (Functions, App Service, Logic Apps, or similar).
• Build internal web applications, front end and back end, that replace manual and spreadsheet-based processes.
• Integrate our systems of record, including EMR, CRM, HRIS, and telephony and messaging software, through their APIs and file exchanges, and keep those integrations reliable.
• Build and maintain data pipelines into our Databricks environment, with validation and monitoring.
• Manage cloud resources with infrastructure as code, and set up environments, CI/CD, automated testing and monitoring.
• Handle PHI correctly: access controls, secrets management, logging and documentation that holds up to an audit.
• Help set the standards for code review, testing and documentation as the team grows, and work alongside other engineers brought in for specific projects.
• Stay close to the people using what you build, measure whether it is working, and improve it based on their feedback.
What you bring
• Five or more years of professional software development, including at least three years building and running production systems in the cloud, ideally Azure.
• Back-end development in Python and JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js), and front-end development with a modern framework such as React.
• Strong SQL and relational database design.
• Experience integrating third-party systems through REST APIs, webhooks and file exchanges.
• Hands-on experience building with large language models, such as document extraction, classification or summarization, including how to test and evaluate the results.
• Experience working with PHI under HIPAA, or in another regulated environment.
• Clear communicator who can sit with non-technical colleagues, understand a process, and judge whether it needs new software, a simple automation, AI, or a better process.
• Comfortable working independently and owning your work end to end.
Nice to have
• Infrastructure as code (Bicep, ARM or Terraform) and CI/CD (Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions).
• Databricks, Spark or Power BI.
• Microsoft Entra ID, Power Platform and Azure OpenAI.
• Integrations with EMR, CRM or HRIS software, or telephony and messaging APIs.
• Healthcare or behavioral health experience.
Our environment
Azure, Databricks, Power BI and Microsoft 365. Our main business systems include an EMR, a CRM, an HRIS and a cloud phone and messaging system, each with its own API.
