Position Summary
The Virtual Chief Information Officer (vCIO) is a senior strategic advisor for Magna5 clients who subscribe to vCIO services. The vCIO partners with client executives and business leaders to connect technology decisions to business priorities, risk reduction, operational resilience, employee productivity, and measurable outcomes. This role acts as an extension of the client’s leadership team while coordinating closely with Magna5 Customer Success Managers (CSMs), Technical Champions, Solutions Engineering, Project Delivery, Security, and regional teams.
Success requires business judgment, executive presence, technical breadth, disciplined follow-through, and high emotional intelligence. The vCIO must listen for both stated and unstated concerns, adapt communication to the audience, navigate difficult conversations calmly, and build trust without avoiding accountability or urgency.
Role Boundaries: The vCIO owns the client's business-aligned technology strategy, multi-year roadmap, holistic IT financial plan, and executive decision cadence. The vCIO relies on technical teams and delivery teams for detailed environmental analysis, technical validation, and implementation execution.
What You Will Own
? Client strategy and business alignment: Translate each client’s goals, constraints, and risk profile into a practical multi-year technology strategy. Connect recommendations to a clear business driver, expected outcome, timing, investment, dependencies, and measure of success.
? Technology roadmaps: Own, create, maintain, prioritize, and present an integrated, multi-year technology roadmap that balances risk, business value, technical dependencies, budget, and organizational readiness.
? Holistic IT financial planning: Help clients understand and plan their complete technology spend, including Magna5 services, third-party vendors, licensing, projects, infrastructure, security, lifecycle needs, and business applications.
? Executive cadence: Own and lead monthly strategy sessions. Develop the roadmap, budget, and business-driver portions of Executive Business Reviews and participate in recurring Business Reviews with the CSM.
? Assessment and risk advisory: Use available technical assessments, business discovery, compliance considerations, incident trends, lifecycle data, and client priorities to identify gaps, strategic risks, and improvement opportunities.
? Strategic onboarding: Lead the strategic onboarding of new vCIO clients, including business discovery, executive priorities, current-state review, risk posture, budget considerations, gap analysis, initial priorities, and roadmap development.
? Recommendation quality: Provide final strategic review and sign-off for statements of work and quotes that originate from vCIO recommendations or roadmap initiatives, including strategic alignment, business justification, roadmap priority, timing, and investment value.
? Cross-functional leadership: Provide the context Magna5 delivery teams need to understand why an initiative matters, what outcome is expected, and how the work fits the client’s larger plan.
? Executive escalation and vendor support: When engaged by the CSM, support executive-level decisions and strategic escalations by framing options, clarifying ownership, supporting third-party escalations, and driving accountable next steps across internal and external stakeholders.
? Documentation and reporting: Keep client roadmaps, budgets, decisions, risks, and next steps current in approved Magna5 systems. Track time accurately in a Ticketing System/PSA and deliver required reporting and documentation.
Client Leadership and Emotional Intelligence
? Bring self-awareness and composure to every conversation, helping clients work through competing priorities and important recommendations with confidence.
? Listen actively, ask thoughtful questions, and confirm understanding before proposing solutions.
? Read the room and adapt the level of detail, pace, tone, and message for executives, business leaders, and technical stakeholders.
? Communicate risk and urgency clearly and calmly, keeping conversations focused on solutions and practical next steps.
? Show empathy for business constraints while offering honest, balanced guidance on risk, trade-offs, ownership, and the value of acting at the right time.
? Build credibility through preparation, reliability, discretion, follow-through, and a low-ego approach to collaboration.
? Welcome different perspectives, guide conversations toward common ground, facilitate decisions, and strengthen trusted relationships through change.
Required Qualifications
? 10+ years of progressive experience in IT services, technology consulting, client advisory, IT leadership, or a comparable business-facing technology role.
? Demonstrated experience advising senior leaders, presenting recommendations, and influencing decisions without relying on direct authority.
? Experience developing technology roadmaps, investment plans, or IT budgets that extend beyond a single provider’s products and services.
? Ability to translate technical risk, dependencies, and options into concise business language for non-technical decision-makers.
? Broad understanding of modern business technology environments, including Microsoft 365, identity and access, endpoint management, networking, cloud services, backup and recovery, cybersecurity, collaboration, line-of-business applications, and data governance.
? Working knowledge of managed IT service delivery, including service desk, NOC, proactive management, ticketing, documentation, projects, service levels, and vendor coordination.
? Strong written communication, executive presentation, facilitation, prioritization, time management, and follow-through.
? Bachelor’s degree in business, information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
? Technical foundation with business mindset: This role requires prior hands-on technical experience, such as systems administration, network or cloud engineering, cybersecurity, or solutions engineering. The ideal candidate is technical at heart but business-minded, able to break down complex technical concepts into clear, meaningful terms for business leaders who may not have a technical background.
? Experience working for or with a managed services provider (MSP), technology consulting firm, or outsourced IT organization.
? Experience supporting clients in regulated or risk-sensitive industries and discussing governance, compliance, cyber insurance, policy, resilience, and business continuity.
? Familiarity with the business-management, documentation, and reporting tools commonly used by MSPs, paired with the ability to quickly learn a client's line-of-business applications and understand how they affect the broader technology environment, including integrations, security, licensing, support needs, and roadmap priorities.
? Relevant credentials such as ITIL, PMP, CISSP, CISM, Microsoft certifications, or business/finance training. Certifications are valued but do not replace demonstrated advisory capability.
How Success Will Be Evaluated
? Client retention: Clients renew and stay with Magna5 because they see clear, ongoing value in the vCIO partnership and trust the guidance they receive.
? Organic, advisory-led growth: Revenue growth is measured, but it must be genuine. The vCIO advises on customer spend. New projects, services, and investments should come naturally from sound recommendations that clients understand, agree with, and choose to act on because those recommendations serve their business.
? Roadmaps are current, prioritized, financially grounded, and clearly connected to client business goals and risks.
? Client leaders understand the rationale, trade-offs, cost, timing, ownership, and expected outcome of major recommendations.
? Strategy sessions and business reviews are prepared, decision-oriented, and followed by documented next steps.
? Internal teams receive clear strategic context, and recommendations are coordinated across sales, engineering, projects, operations, and customer success.
? Commitments, documentation, time entry, reporting, and follow-up are completed consistently and accurately.
? The vCIO earns trust through strong judgment, emotional intelligence, reliable execution, and candid, respectful communication.
Working Conditions and Expectations
? Maintain a quiet, professional, and secure workspace suitable for confidential client and internal conversations.
This is a fully remote role. Onsite visits for client meetings and Business Reviews are expected as needed. They are not weekly but may at times be monthly, and the vCIO uses their judgment to determine when a client would benefit from onsite support.
? Work across multiple client priorities and deadlines while maintaining confidentiality, organization, and responsiveness.
? Standard working hours are generally 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; however, longer days, evening work, and schedule flexibility should be expected when client or business needs require it.
