Description

The Test Engineer – Electrical, within the Engineering team, is responsible for developing, configuring, and executing electrical design verification (DV) and production validation (PV) testing for ruggedized electronic products, including displays, sensors, and electronic controllers designed for use in automotive, industrial, marine, and other demanding environments.

This role requires a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC/EMI), and regulatory compliance testing. Responsibilities include interpreting product requirements and applicable industry standards, developing test plans and laboratory setups, conducting tests, analyzing results, troubleshooting failures, and documenting findings. Working closely with Hardware, Firmware, Mechanical, Quality, and Manufacturing teams, the Test Engineer verifies that products meet electrical performance, reliability, and regulatory requirements prior to product launch.

Key Responsibilities

  • Test Planning: Develop electrical design verification and validation test plans and procedures based on product requirements, customer specifications, and applicable industry standards.
  • Electrical Testing: Execute electrical performance and immunity testing, including power supply variation, load dump, reverse polarity, electrical fast transient (EFT), surge, and electrostatic discharge (ESD).
  • EMC/EMI Testing: Develop and configure test setups and execute EMC pre-compliance and compliance testing, including conducted and radiated emissions and immunity. Interpret test requirements and configure appropriate equipment, harnesses, grounding, shielding, and functional monitoring to ensure accurate and repeatable results.
  • Test Methods and Fixtures: Develop test procedures, operating conditions, functional monitoring methods, and acceptance criteria. Design and build test fixtures, wiring harnesses, load boxes, and test interfaces.
  • Test Equipment: Evaluate, specify, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instrumentation and test equipment to support product development and validation.
  • Test Automation: Develop automated test sequences and stations using LabVIEW, NI TestStand, Python, or similar tools to improve test efficiency, repeatability, and data collection.
  • Test Monitoring and Analysis: Evaluate product performance before, during, and after testing to identify degradation, intermittent failures, resets, communication disruptions, and other abnormal behavior.
  • Embedded and Network Testing: Verify communication interfaces and functionality, including CAN/J1939, RS-485, Ethernet, USB, GMSL, A2B audio, FPD-Link, and analog and digital I/O.
  • Failure Analysis and Reporting: Troubleshoot electrical and EMC/EMI failures, investigate root causes to the board and component level, document findings, and prepare clear, comprehensive test reports.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Track defects, collaborate with Hardware, Firmware, and Mechanical Engineering to validate corrective actions, and support design reviews and engineering change evaluations.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology (EET), or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in electronic hardware testing, electrical design verification, or embedded product validation.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical test instrumentation, including oscilloscopes, digital multimeters (DMMs), spectrum analyzers, programmable power supplies, electronic loads, and data acquisition systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, PCB layouts, wiring diagrams, and product specifications, with experience troubleshooting electrical issues to the component level.
  • Ability to interpret EMC/EMI test plans and applicable standards and independently develop and configure appropriate laboratory test setups, including equipment selection, wiring and harness arrangements, grounding, shielding, and functional monitoring interfaces.
  • Experience developing and executing electrical test plans, test procedures, and technical test reports.
  • Working knowledge of test automation, scripting, or instrument control using LabVIEW, Python, NI TestStand, or similar tools.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple testing programs and priorities.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, customers, and external test laboratories.

Preferred

  • Experience testing electronic products for automotive, marine, off-highway, or industrial applications.
  • Hands-on experience with automotive EMC/EMI standards, including SAE J1113, ISO 7637, ISO 11452, SAE J1455, and CISPR 25.
  • Experience with European and UK product compliance requirements, including CE marking, the EU EMC Directive, the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), and applicable harmonized standards.
  • Knowledge of North American regulatory requirements, including FCC Part 15 and ISED/ICES.
  • Exposure to supporting product safety certification under applicable IEC/EN standards and the CB Scheme.
  • Working knowledge of CAN and SAE J1939 communication protocols and tools such as Vector CANalyzer or PCAN.
  • Experience developing automated test systems using NI TestStand and LabVIEW; NI CLAD or CLD certification.
  • Knowledge of environmental testing, including thermal, vibration, ingress protection, and HALT/HASS.
  • Familiarity with DFMEA, DVP&R, and APQP/PPAP processes.
  • Background in coordinating testing with external EMC/EMI and regulatory certification laboratories.
