Job Title: Senior Software Engineer, Backend
Location: Remote (United States)
Reports To: Engineering Manager
Department: Product Development
FLSA Status: Exempt
Planet Depos is a leading global court reporting firm that harnesses innovative technology to streamline proceedings and deliver better outcomes for clients. As the only international firm led by industry experts, our team is dedicated to reshaping the field with cutting-edge, technology-driven services, including Planet Pro™, our AI-powered litigation technology suite.
We are replacing the legacy platform that runs our scheduling, billing and file workflows with a platform built in-house, and we need a senior backend engineer to help build it. You will work closely with an architect and a front-end lead, building systems that legal professionals and court reporters rely on every day. You will design and build services and data models, help decide how they fit together, and work with the team to move production workflows off the old platform without disrupting the people who depend on them.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, build and maintain backend services and APIs in TypeScript and Node.js.
- Design and evolve relational database schemas (we use PostgreSQL), including migrating data from a legacy system into a standardized model.
- Build and consume event-driven integrations over a message broker.
- Partner with product and engineering leads to turn requirements into work the team can estimate and deliver.
- Write automated tests (unit, integration and end-to-end) and keep CI/CD pipelines healthy.
- Review code, and mentor and support other engineers.
- Troubleshoot production issues and help turn incidents into permanent fixes.
- Document the systems you build so others can run and extend them.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
Annual Salary: $150,000 - $185,000, commensurate with experience
Planet Depos also offers a comprehensive benefits package:
- Medical insurance
- Dental insurance
- Vision insurance
- Health Savings Account
- Voluntary Term Life Insurance
- Voluntary Long-Term Disability
- Paid Time Off
- Paid Holidays
- 401(k)
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Required (all three of the following, with specific examples):
- Production backend experience. 7+ years building and running backend services. For example: a service you owned from design to production; an API whose contract you changed without breaking its consumers; a performance or reliability problem you traced to its cause.
- Strong data modeling. Hands-on experience with relational databases; any is fine, and we use PostgreSQL. For example: a schema you designed or reshaped; a data migration you planned and verified; how you handled data that did not fit the new model.
- Delivery habits. You test your work, make small, reviewed changes, and ship regularly. For example: how you structure a change so it can be released safely; a release that went wrong and what you changed afterward.
Also required:
- Clear written and verbal communication.
- A degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Preferred:
- TypeScript and Node.js on a service framework such as NestJS.
- Event-driven architecture with RabbitMQ or a similar broker.
- AWS (for example data migration services, serverless, monitoring).
- Infrastructure as code (Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Trunk-based development, feature flags and continuous deployment.
- Replacing or migrating away from a legacy system.
- GraphQL, REST and WebSockets; API gateway products.
- Agile Scrum teams.
