Library Associate Rate $10.97 to $14.31 (Part Time 20 hours per week)

Description

• May be assigned to work at any library branch

• Responsible for opening or closing library on a rotating basis with other library personnel

• Charges and discharges books, collects fines, renews books, and registers new patrons using the library’s automated circulation system; maintains daily and monthly records and statistics of library usage

• Assists patrons in the proper use of the Library’s online catalog, in the selection and location of library materials, and assists patrons placing holds and ILL requests

• Shelves books and reads shelves

• Answers phone and calls patrons

• Covers small branches in the absence of the Branch Manager

• Processes daily delivery and empties book drops

• Puts new magazines on display

• May answer basic or ready reference questions

• Works nights and weekends

• Performs other duties and assignments as assigned by Management

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

• Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public

• Must have the ability to make decisions recognizing established precedents, practices and systems, and to use resourcefulness, tact, and courtesy in meeting new problems and in dealing with library patrons

• Must have the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions

• Must have basic computer skills

• Must have the ability to use copy machines, microfiche/microfilm equipment


Working Conditions


Work is performed primarily in a library environment while sitting at a desk or computer terminal or while standing at a counter for extended periods of time. Physical exertion may be required to replace or retrieve materials from shelves, high and low. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation are essential to permit the employee to read and sort library materials and observe and review the work of others.



Physical Requirements

• Must have the ability to lift at least 25 pounds, push, bend, and reach as needed

• Must have the physical stamina to stand for long time periods


Minimum Education, Experience, and Training

• High school diploma; degreed applicants preferred

• Prior work experience assisting the public is a plus

• Must have a valid Louisiana driver’s license
