Description

To assure an encouraging and positive learning environment for students while their regular/homeroom teacher is absent, the Substitute Teacher is responsible to effectively manage, lead and teach the class from roll call until all students have left campus. The Substitute Teacher performs duties that are instructional in nature or deliver direct services to students or parents. 

 

Essential Duties and responsibilities: 

  • Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive environment. 
  • Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student. 
  • Provide in-class and at-home assignments based on the available lesson plan. 
  • Supervises students in classrooms, halls, cafeteria, bathrooms, school yard, and gymnasium, or on field trips if applicable.
  • Tutors and assists children individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by the homeroom teacher.
  • Long-term substitutes must develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the regular teacher’s previous lesson plans. 
  • Enforces administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education. 
  • Related experience in similar position is preferred. 
  • General knowledge in several subjects as well as teaching certificate are a plus. 

Organizational/Interpersonal Skills:

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are required. 

Language/Communication Skills:

  • The ability to lead and instruct students of all ages as well as to communicate, listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. 
  • The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing. 
  • Strong command of both written and spoken English language.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The ability to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to reach, grasp, feel, and see up close and from afar. Must be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (15 pounds).
