JOB TITLE: 3D Texture Artist (Intern)
REPORTS TO: Department Manager / Team Lead
FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Hourly, Non-Exempt
COMPANY OVERVIEW:
MOBIS Technical Center of North America is the Research & Development Center for Hyundai MOBIS, a Tier 1 supplier and an affiliate under Hyundai Motor Group. MOBIS produces and supplies a wide variety of automotive components to customers including component modules (chassis, cockpit and front-end module), core systems, eco-friendly and DAS-mechatronics. MOBIS delivers the design and development of advanced engineering, autonomous driving, infotainment, component modules, safety, brake and steering systems, lamps, ICS/electronics, and software development solutions that consider the safety and convenience of our customers as well as the future.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND SKILLS:
Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Create photorealistic, physically based rendering (PBR) textures and materials for digital humans and automotive interiors used in visualization, simulation, and synthetic data generation projects.
- Texture realistic human skin, eyes, hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes, capturing natural color variation, pores, fine wrinkles, and other subtle surface details.
- Develop and refine skin, eye, and hair materials using appropriate subsurface scattering, transparency, and anisotropic shading to achieve believable responses to light.
- Create automotive interior materials including leather, fabric, carpet, plastic, rubber, wood, and metal, with accurate grain, weave, stitching, surface finish, and material scale.
- Author and maintain PBR texture sets, including base color, roughness, metallic, normal, and displacement or height maps, with additional maps as required by the target shader.
- Prepare UV layouts, bake texture maps, and refine photographic or scan-based source materials, removing baked-in lighting and maintaining consistent texel density and surface detail.
- Validate materials under multiple lighting conditions in Unreal Engine 5 or the target renderer, and optimize texture resolution, material complexity, and memory use for project requirements.
- Collaborate with artists, engineering, and research teams; incorporate feedback; and document material settings, source references, naming conventions, and asset handoff procedures.
ADDITIONAL REQUIRED SKILLS / REQUIREMENTS:
- Demonstrated experience creating photorealistic PBR textures, with a strong understanding of base color, roughness, metallic and dielectric surfaces, normal maps, displacement, and color management.
- Proficiency in Substance 3D Painter or an equivalent professional texturing tool, plus Blender or Maya for UV preparation and asset inspection. Familiarity with Substance 3D Designer, Mari, or Photoshop is beneficial.
- Hands-on experience texturing realistic human skin and eyes, and creating or refining hair materials. Ability to explain the use of subsurface scattering, roughness variation, and fine surface detail.
- Ability to work from photographic reference and distinguish leather, fabric, plastics, and other interior finishes through physically plausible material properties. Familiarity with Unreal Engine 5, MetaHuman, UDIMs, photogrammetry, and version control is beneficial.
In addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, tasks relating to the following areas will be assigned as required:
- Work collaboratively, respond constructively to art direction, and communicate progress and technical issues clearly.
- Demonstrate strong attention to detail, particularly in material scale, texture seams, surface variation, and consistency with reference.
- Maintain clear verbal and written communication and organized production files and documentation.
- Manage assigned work reliably, meet agreed deadlines, and learn new tools and workflows as project needs evolve.
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION / YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Graphics, Digital Art, Animation, Game Art, Visual Effects, Digital Media, or a related field, or equivalent relevant training and portfolio experience.
- 0–5 years of relevant experience; academic, personal, freelance, and professional projects may demonstrate the required skills.
- Portfolio required demonstrating photorealistic human skin and eyes, hair materials, and realistic automotive interior materials or comparable leather, fabric, and plastic studies. Include PBR texture-map breakdowns, software used, and a clear description of personally authored work versus supplied assets, scans, or materials.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Primarily office and engineering lab environment.?
- May require extended periods of computer work, content creation, and documentation.?
EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
- Standard business hours with flexibility based on project needs and academic schedule.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
