Energy Assessor – Residential and/or Commercial New Construction(Pennsylvania/Delaware)

PSD is seeking an Energy Assessor to collect data on energy efficiency features of new residential and commercial buildings across Delaware and Pennsylvania. Data collection will be part of two U.S. Department of Energy funded energy efficiency field studies. The goals of these field studies include determining industry standard practice for energy efficiency in new residential and commercial construction and identifying areas for improvement to inform future training, education, and outreach efforts.  The position will be for 12 months, starting in December 2024, with the possibility of becoming permanent.

Who is PSD?

PSD is a rapidly growing national leader in the building science and energy efficiency industries. PSD’s passionate team of energy efficiency professionals works hard every day to develop and deliver creative and powerful solutions that drive change in the way buildings use energy. PSD provides a whole-systems approach to energy efficiency strategies through our work on advancing energy policies, designing and delivering cost-effective energy efficiency programs, and building software tools to streamline data tracking and reporting. Our core business efforts span three major areas: 1) the delivery of high-impact energy efficiency programs; 2) workforce development and industry training; and 3) the design and development of efficiency software platforms.

What will you do?

The successful candidate will travel to an assigned list of active construction projects to observe specific energy efficiency related features of the buildings. Data will be collected during foundation, insulation, and final phases of construction following a checklist built into a tablet-based app. The assessor will also perform blower door testing and duct leakage testing using industry standard protocols.

Position responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Negotiating access to job sites with builder representatives
  • Keeping data confidential so as not to reveal individual home or builder identity outside the PSD project team.
  • Observing and recording data on pre-drywall air barrier and insulation measures, heating, cooling, and hot water appliance types and efficiencies, window U-factors and SHGCs, and lighting
  • Performing blower door and duct leakage testing, including measuring building dimensions, and calculating conditioned floor area and volume
  • Recording inspection observations and testing results with photo documentation in a tablet-based app

This position is remote with significant travel within Pennsylvania and Delaware consisting of multiple consecutive overnight stays.
