POSITION DESCRIPTION: Natural Resources Research and Monitoring Intern


POSTION GOAL: To assist Metroparks with natural areas and species conservation on priority sites through biological monitoring, research, and education. Internship will provide students an opportunity to complement their formal education with work experience.


CLASSIFICATION: Hourly – Intern – Non-exempt


COMPENSATION: $15.00 per hour. Employer and employee contribute to Public Employee Retirement System.


REPORTS TO: Research and Monitoring Supervisor


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  Assist Metroparks staff and volunteers with implementing biological research and monitoring plans throughout the park district.
  •  Use GPS equipment and IPad.
  •  Conduct biological monitoring of northwest Ohio ecosystems, flora, and fauna. 
  •  Collect data using field equipment and established monitoring protocols; maintain and organize field equipment.
  •  Conduct reviews of scientific literature; complete research and monitoring reports.
  • Other park related duties as assigned

EQUIPMENT USED: Computer (MS Office Suite), GPS unit, IPAD, camera, general office equipment, map and compass, meter tapes, DBH tape, binoculars, gator and/or golf cart.



Requirements

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Alternates to the following position requirements may be made as Metroparks finds appropriate and acceptable.


Education: Currently completed 3 years or recent graduate from a college degree program in ecology, biology, or related field including some field-related coursework.


Experience: Some ecological research experience in the field including data collection and the use of sampling equipment (can be related to college coursework).


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of natural history of Northwest Ohio and basic experience with identifying local flora and fauna.
  • Ability to use GPS equipment.
  • General knowledge of GIS software and applications.
  • Demonstrated computer skills involving Word and Excel programs in Microsoft Office.
  • Good organizational and planning skills and attention to detail.
  • Must possess effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Will work up to 40 hours per week on a variable schedule to meet project needs; schedule may include weekends and evenings. Term of internship, approximately May through August, not to exceed 18 weeks.
  • Reports to planning department field office, Maumee, Ohio; requires field work throughout the Metroparks service area. 
  • Will require business use of personal vehicle; mileage reimbursement provided.
  • Job requires walking and climbing on uneven terrain. Will work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions including heat and cold.
