The Machinist sets up and operates CNC machining equipment to produce mechanical components for DeShazo's material handling equipment and automation systems. Most jobs are custom, one-off parts — you're rarely running the same setup twice, so the job is less about repeating a proven process and more about figuring out a new one, print by print.
DUTIES:
• Set up and operate CNC machining equipment to produce parts to print.
• Work primarily on custom, low-quantity and one-off parts — most jobs get set up once, run once, and don't repeat, so getting the first piece right matters more than repeating a process.
• Read prints, drawings, and BOMs, and work out how a part should be made — fixturing, operation order, and tooling.
• Select and load tooling, set offsets, run first article, and adjust the process to hold tolerance.
• Take on jobs with little or no repeat history, working out the setup yourself more often than following an existing program.
• Build simple work holding — soft jaws, jigs, and similar fixtures — to hold parts securely and repeatably for the job at hand.
• Inspect finished parts against print requirements using standard measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, indicators).
• Keep your machine, tooling, and work area organized and ready to run.
• Flag print questions, tooling needs, or process issues.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• High school diploma or GED.
• Hands-on machining experience, or equivalent machining/CNC trade school training.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical prints, drawings, and BOMs.
• Basic computer skills (Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel).
• Own basic measuring and hand tools — calipers, micrometers, indicators — or a willingness to acquire them.
• Comfortable switching between different parts and setups frequently, rather than running the same job for an extended stretch.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• CAM programming experience.
• Experience setting up jobs from a print or model with no process already worked out.
• Forklift experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Regularly lift up to 25 lbs.
• Occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
• Stand/walk for 8-10-hour shifts
• Be able to work in any position (reach, bend, kneel, etc.)
• Ability to learn quickly and retain information long term
