Position Status: May-November term, 18 hours per week (450 hours in total) 


KEXP’s Internship Program seeks to provide interns from historically under-invited and under-represented communities with hands-on work experience. KEXP internships are educational experiences and we seek applicants who are at the beginning of their career journey or embarking on a career change.


All internships are a limited term, 18 hours per week (450 hours in total) and include:

  • $22 per hour compensation
  • opportunities for mentoring
  • cohort activities

Internship Position Summary: The Community Events Intern will be part of KEXP’s Community Engagement Team, contributing to our efforts to plan, produce, and execute successful mission-based events that serve the community, with a focus on youth (ages 14-26) and families. This intern will collaborate with KEXP’s Advancement, Facilities, Programming and Production teams, and be involved in all aspects of event planning leading up to the event, as well as day of show, to create meaningful in-person experiences for KEXP audiences, especially youth and families. This intern will be involved in minor and major details of select KEXP events and gain invaluable experience in event logistics, communication, curation, and more. 


Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with event stakeholder groups to produce successful community events
  • Contribute to event-related materials, including documentation, collateral, and written communications
  • Facilitate youth engagement and input on artist booking for youth and family focused events; use youth input to curate artists in collaboration with KEXP’s Director of Community Engagement
  • Request and schedule event volunteers for select KEXP events
  • Provide day-of event support, including but not limited to set-up, coordinating deliveries, working with event volunteers, guest relations, production support, and strike
  • Contribute to the improvement and evolution of community events by participating in retrospective meetings
  • Attend biweekly Event Stakeholder Meetings

Skills Learned:

  • Best practices in event planning and production including run of show/timeline, advancing, event documentation shared with key stakeholders, and writing/developing talking points
  • Opportunity to supervise, direct and provide guidance to events volunteers
  • Interpersonal skills needed for collaboration within and across teams and departments
  • Experience in cloud-based systems including Shiftboard, Smartsheet, Tito, etc.
  • Project management skills that maximize efficiency, accountability, and documentation
  • Priority and time management skills  
  • Additional opportunity to pursue project or learn specific skill based on personal interest (with approval from Supervisor)

Working Conditions: Interns are required to come into the office at least one day a week. Must be flexible with both working remotely or at the office, depending on need and company policy based on public health recommendations at the time. Remote working will require a consistently quiet and productive space, and office work operates in a typical business environment.

Requirements

General Qualifications:

  • Passion for and commitment to KEXP’s mission
  • Some experience in event planning, such as vendor coordination, guest list management, or run of show development
  • Some experience in day-of event support, such as set-up, strike, or guest relations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative on projects, and follow instructions
  • Comfortable asking questions
  • Commitment to maintain a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects at once
  • Availability to work occasional nights and weekends

Physical Requirements: Long periods of being in a stationary position; operating a computer and other office equipment; frequently communicating by phone, email, and video conferencing; frequently remaining in a stationary position during meetings, discerning meeting content, expressing oneself, and exchanging accurate information; occasionally move equipment and supplies, items may weigh up to 50 pounds.
