JOB SUMMARY
Library Systems and Services is seeking friendly, enthusiastic, and service oriented Library Associate for Youth Services at the Huntsville Public Library located in Huntsville, TX. This part time Library Associate plays a vital role in supporting and providing library service and programming for and with young adults of the library. This candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating engaging programs and services that inspire young patrons, including tween and older teen ages, while supporting their parents, teachers, and caregivers.
We are seeking an individual with a strong knowledge of children's and young adult literature, as well as a passion for promoting literacy. Candidates should have a keen interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), the humanities, and creative educational programming. Additionally, we require a commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for our multicultural community. A positive, optimistic, and supportive attitude is essential for this position.
Hours worked per week: 20
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES
An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
- Provides children’s department and program support for the library under direction of management as requested
- Assist in the development and presentation of innovative classes, events, and programs including STEM workshops, book clubs, artistic expression, coding and more for tweens and older teens.
- Provide readers’ advisory, answer reference questions, promote library events, and engage with children, teens, and parents in the library
- Assisting in planning, executing, and assessing summer reading programs, school break events, and other seasonal initiatives in accordance with library outreach and program initiatives
- Collaborate with other library team members to achieve program goals and objectives.
- Provides technology support including essential computer use assistance, such as hardware and digital device software to patrons
- Provides children’s department and program support for the library under direction of management as requested
- Assists patrons with locating materials, using computers, or explaining procedures (checking out, logging onto the Internet, making copies, etc.)
- May handle opening and closing responsibilities, counting money, completing daily cash reports
- May coordinate volunteers and assign duties, providing necessary training
- Addresses or escalates patron conduct or safety issues to appropriate management
- Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records
- Know and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library. In addition to these freedoms, support client discretion of materials available at your local library(ies)
- Other duties as assigned: including but not limited to assistance at circulation and patron assistance.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.
- H.S. Diploma or GED
- Two years’ library experience preferred, or equivalent youth services experience
- Basic knowledge of library systems and databases preferred
- Ability to work a regular schedule that includes a combination of days, evenings and weekends
- Excellent customer service skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, comfort with technology, including computers and cell phones
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal
- English/Spanish speaking a plus
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to frequently move from place to place within the location; file and retrieve books and other items on high shelves.
- Lift/push up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. of heavy boxes, books, and equipment; work in confined spaces; walk; bend; stoop; reach; and climb.
