JOB SUMMARY

  

The Librarian I is the entry-level position within the Librarian job family. The Children’s Librarian plans and delivers engaging youth programs for infants, toddlers, and school-age children, supports early literacy and school readiness, provides readers’ advisory and reference services for children and their caregivers, manages children’s collections, and collaborates with staff to deliver inclusive, high-quality library services.
 

With oversight from their direct supervisor, this role works both independently and collaboratively to execute projects ranging from small improvements to larger initiatives that enhance the patron experience. Librarians are responsible for organizing and managing library resources and may supervise paraprofessional staff and volunteers.

Hours Per Week: 40
Hourly Rate: $26.00


Note: If you are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS program but have not yet completed the degree, you may be considered for this role as a Librarian Intern. The hourly pay rate for Librarian Intern is $25.00 per hour.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.  

  • Coordinates and executes a variety of programs and initiatives for the library focused on children (infants through school-age) and their families, including Storytimes and early literacy programs
  • Provides reference and computer assistance to children, caregivers, and families 
  • Serves on committees and, at times, may serve as the chairperson for committees 
  • May handle opening and closing responsibilities
  • Is responsible for the collection management process, including children’s books and early learning materials
  • Serves as a proficient readers’ advisor for children and their caregivers
  • Participates in outreach to the community, including schools, daycares, and community organizations
  • May supervise Library Associates, including managing performance, conducting evaluations, interviewing and hiring, training, and approving timesheets 
  • Knows and understands the American Library Association Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement, and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library 
  • Follows all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records 
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below and meet the required education, training, and/or work experience:

  • MLS or MLIS degree required. Note: If you are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS program but have not yet completed the degree, you may be considered for this role as a Librarian Intern 
  • One year of librarian experience preferred; relevant paraprofessional library experience or educator experience may substitute
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint 
  • Knowledge of online library databases and services 
  • Excellent customer service skills 
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including experience communicating with children and caregivers in a public service setting 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) speaking proficiency is a plus

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to move from place to place within the location, lifting of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to 35 pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
