Job Summary
Shelves and organizes Library materials and assists with routine clerical duties under the supervision of an assigned staff member.
Core Job Functions
- Greets customers and provides directions or refers them to appropriate staff members for customer service
- Sorts and shelves Library materials and maintains shelf order
- Pulls damaged and worn materials from shelves
- Clears abandoned Library materials from public areas
- Restocks displays and straightens shelves
- Monitors the Library to maintain a safe environment
- Participate in workshops or trainings as requested
- May:
- Perform routine circulation procedures, such as checking materials in and checking hold lists, checking book drop, and processing delivery
- Pull materials from the collection using various reports
- Participate in branch or system wide work teams
- Assist with mending, re-labeling, re-packaging and re-covering of damaged or donated materials
- Assist with Library programs
- Assist with branch opening and closing procedures
- Performs other duties and participates in special projects, as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Technological systems and their uses as described under Level 1– All Staff Technology Competency (see Technology Competencies)
Ability to:
- Learn St. Mary’s County Library policies and procedures
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, Library trustees, local government elected and appointed officials, community leaders, vendors, and citizens
- Use common sense and good judgement
Skills:
- Excellent communication skills, both in writing and orally
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent decision-making and problem solving skills with emphasis on personal responsibility and willingness to deal with issues at hand
Training and/or Education
Some high school education. Must be 16 years or older.

Licenses or Certificates
Work permit is required for all minors under the age of 18 to work in the State of Maryland.
Physical Demands
Work requires light physical effort in the handling of materials or boxes in non-strenuous work positions not to exceed 30 pounds and/or standing and/or walking 75%+ of the time.
Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g., use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls.
