POSITION OVERVIEW
The Junior Field Mechanic supports Gable’s Field Operations team by assisting Field Mechanics, Senior Field Mechanics, and field team members with job preparation, loading, vehicle organization, material handling, tool readiness, installation support, cleanup, and general field execution.
This is an entry-level to developing mechanic role intended for a team member who is building the technical skills, safety habits, and field knowledge needed to progress into a Field Mechanic role. The Junior Field Mechanic works under supervision, follows direction, escalates issues appropriately, and contributes to safe, efficient, and professional field operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Preparation, Loading, and Job Site Support
- Assist Field Mechanics and Senior Field Mechanics with daily preparation for field work, including loading vehicles, organizing tools, staging materials, checking equipment readiness, and supporting job site setup.
- Help maintain clean, organized, and properly stocked work vehicles so field teams have the tools, materials, hardware, safety equipment, and job information needed to complete assigned work efficiently.
- Support installation and service activities by carrying materials, preparing work areas, setting up tools, assisting with layout or mounting tasks, and completing assigned hands-on work under supervision.
- Assist with unloading, cleanup, return of tools and materials, and end-of-day organization to help maintain an efficient and professional field operation.
- Use labor, materials, tools, and equipment responsibly to support completion of assigned work within expected timeframes.
- Follow direction from supervising mechanics and field leadership, ask questions when instructions are unclear, and escalate issues rather than attempting to resolve items beyond the role’s skill level or authority.
- Support yard, shop, warehouse, and vehicle-related tasks when needed, including material movement, organization, staging, and general readiness activities.
Developing Technical Skills, Safety, and Workmanship
- Build practical mechanical, construction, electrical, tool-use, installation, safety, and field operations skills through hands-on work, instruction, observation, and repetition.
- Use hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, fasteners, materials, and field equipment safely and appropriately based on training, instruction, and job site conditions.
- Assist with basic installation tasks while learning proper methods for measuring, fastening, mounting, leveling, assembly, handling, protection of finished materials, and job site cleanup.
- Help minimize scrap, rework, damage, and material waste through careful handling, attention to detail, and responsible workmanship.
- Follow safety procedures, PPE requirements, job site rules, vehicle safety expectations, and Field Operations Code of Conduct standards at all times.
- Communicate unsafe conditions, damaged materials, missing tools, equipment concerns, product quality issues, or job site problems to the supervising mechanic or appropriate field leader.
- Maintain awareness of surroundings when working near traffic, equipment, lifts, ladders, electrical components, overhead work, active construction areas, and other field hazards.
Communication, Teamwork, and Professional Conduct
- Work cooperatively with Field Mechanics, Senior Field Mechanics, helpers, field team members, production team members, and other internal groups to support safe and efficient job completion.
- Maintain a professional attitude, arrive prepared, follow schedules and instructions, and contribute to a respectful and productive team environment.
- Communicate clearly with the supervising mechanic regarding task status, material needs, issues encountered, and support required.
- Follow Gable’s Field Operations Code of Conduct while working with internal team members, clients, vendors, general contractors, and others on job sites.
- Demonstrate dependability, punctuality, accountability, and a willingness to learn from feedback and coaching.
- Support basic documentation or job closeout needs when requested, including relaying completed work, missing items, field conditions, or other relevant information to the supervising mechanic.
- Take initiative on appropriate support tasks such as cleanup, organization, material staging, tool readiness, and helping keep the crew moving efficiently.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Basic electrical knowledge, construction experience, trade school exposure, field labor experience, shop experience, or comparable hands-on mechanical aptitude preferred.
- Developing knowledge of hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, fasteners, construction materials, installation methods, and safe work practices.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately and ask questions when clarification is needed.
- Strong work ethic, dependability, punctuality, cooperative attitude, and willingness to learn from experienced mechanics and field leaders.
- Ability to work safely and productively in shop, yard, vehicle, warehouse, and field environments.
- Ability to support physical field work, including loading, unloading, carrying materials, staging tools, assisting with installation tasks, and maintaining organized work areas.
- Basic ability to recognize and communicate safety concerns, material issues, quality concerns, equipment problems, or job site obstacles.
- Clean driving record required.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a field operations team and maintain professionalism with coworkers, clients, vendors, and job site contacts.
- Commitment to safety, quality, continuous improvement, and growth toward more independent mechanic responsibilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires the ability to perform hands-on operational and field support tasks. The role involves time spent in production, warehouse, yard, vehicle, and field environments. The team member must have manual dexterity to operate tools, equipment, and basic administrative systems when needed, along with visual acuity with correction and the ability to speak and hear effectively.
The position requires the ability to walk, stand, climb stairs or ladders, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, grasp, fasten, reach, and perform work from lifts or elevated work areas when properly trained and authorized. The role may require lifting or moving materials or equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds, with heavier lifts requiring team assistance or equipment.
The role may involve assisting with loading, unloading, staging, inspections, job site preparation, cleanup, and other field-related tasks.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This role operates in a combination of manufacturing, warehouse, yard, vehicle, and field environments. The team member may spend time in production areas, facilities spaces, active installation sites, construction sites, parking lots, rooftops, retail environments, and outdoor job site conditions.
- While performing duties in these environments, the team member may be exposed to inclement weather, traffic, moving mechanical equipment, high voltage, heavy equipment, welding or burning flash, elevated work areas, loud noise, dust, fumes, and changing environmental conditions. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn when required.
TRAVEL
Up to 5% travel may be required.

COMPENSATION
Compensation is commensurate with education and experience. Compensation includes hourly pay, overtime eligibility, 401(k) participation, and ESOP participation.
