Description

The Underground Transmission Engineer will support the engineering and design of underground transmission projects ranging from small assignments to large, complex cable systems. Projects may include new installations, relocations, system upgrades, and underground-to-overhead transitions at voltages ranging from 69kV to 500kV.


This position will support projects from conceptual design and routing through detailed design and construction. Responsibilities include cable-system calculations, duct-bank and manhole design, plan and profile development, technical specifications, and coordination with clients, utilities, vendors, contractors, and other engineering disciplines.


Requirements
  • Designs underground transmission systems in accordance with applicable industry, client, and utility standards.
  • Performs cable ampacity, pulling, cable selection, grounding, and bonding calculations.
  • Develops routes, duct banks, manholes, risers, trenchless crossings, and cable-system layouts.
  • Prepares calculations, drawings, specifications, material lists, and construction packages.
  • Reviews survey, utility, geotechnical, thermal-resistivity, and vendor information.
  • Coordinates with clients, vendors, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Provides technical support during procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning.
  • Supports project estimates, schedules, proposals, and QA/QC activities.
  • Guides junior staff and completes assignments within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Participates in client meetings and project-site visits as required.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, or related engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Three or more years of relevant experience in underground transmission, underground distribution, cable systems, power delivery, or underground utility design.
  • Working knowledge of underground cable systems, duct banks, manholes, cable accessories, and installation methods.
  • Experience preparing engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with transmission systems rated 69kV or higher.
  • Experience with CYMCAP and cable-pulling software such as Pull Planner or Cable 3D.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and work with limited supervision.


For Preferred Consideration (Not Required):

  • Active EIT certification or progress toward professional licensure.
  • Experience with BoreAid or trenchless installation design.
  • Experience supporting cable procurement, construction, testing, or commissioning.
  • A proven ability to work with limited supervision and guidance to execute and meet multiple project commitments.
