Environmental Intern

Westwood Professional Services, Inc.

The Environmental Wetlands Intern will join a team of wetland scientists and ecologists supporting jurisdictional determinations, wetland delineations, and permitting for utility-scale wind, solar, and battery energy storage projects. Projects range from single-parcel delineations to large, multi-county surveys for renewable energy developers, IPPs, and utility clients. This position offers a direct opportunity to apply wetland science and ecology coursework to real-world renewable energy siting and construction projects.

As an Environmental Wetlands Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wetland delineation methodology and regional supplements in the field, and will assist Senior Wetland Scientists in the preparation of delineation reports, jurisdictional determination requests, and Clean Water Act Section 404/401 permitting documentation.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in field wetland delineations using the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers methodology, including soil, vegetation, and hydrology assessments.
  • Collect and record data on wetland boundaries, soil pits, and plant community composition using GPS and mobile data collection tools.
  • Support the preparation of wetland delineation reports, jurisdictional determination requests, and permit applications.
  • Assist with stream and waterbody assessments, including ordinary high water mark determinations.
  • Help maintain field equipment, data forms, and project files to support quality control and agency review.
  • Travel to project sites, often in remote or rural locations, to support field data collection alongside senior staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Wetland Science, Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, or a related field.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, agency representatives, and project team members.
  • Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
  • Willingness to perform physically demanding fieldwork in varied outdoor and weather conditions, including walking long distances over uneven terrain.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications are preferred but not required for consideration:

  • Relevant industry experience through coursework, field research, or prior internships in wetland delineation, botany, or soil science.
  • Experience with GPS/GIS data collection tools (Trimble, ArcGIS Field Maps) or familiarity with the National Wetland Plant List and USDA soil surveys.
