The Role
Barton Associates is seeking a Plumbing Designer to join our Philadelphia office. This position is responsible for designing and documenting plumbing systems for a variety of building projects from initial layout through construction administration. The successful candidate will apply plumbing codes, perform system calculations, prepare construction documents, and coordinate with project teams throughout the design and construction process. Fire protection experience is strongly preferred, while HVAC design experience is beneficial but not required.
Key Responsibilities
- Design plumbing systems including domestic cold and hot water, sanitary waste and vent, storm drainage, and natural gas/propane distribution systems.
- Layout sanitary and vent systems utilizing appropriate venting strategies based on project requirements.
- Size domestic water systems and fuel gas piping, including load calculations, pressure analysis, and regulator selection.
- Design and coordinate medical gas systems for healthcare projects in accordance with NFPA 99 and FGI requirements.
- Produce construction documents in Revit, including plans, risers, details, schedules, specifications, and engineering calculations.
- Apply applicable plumbing, fuel gas, state, and local codes to project designs.
- Support fire protection design and documentation efforts.
- Coordinate with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients throughout project execution.
- Respond to RFIs, review submittals, conduct site surveys, and support construction administration activities.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- Demonstrated experience designing plumbing systems for building projects.
- Working knowledge of the International Plumbing Code and fuel gas codes.
- Experience with sanitary waste and vent system layout and domestic water sizing.
- Proficiency in Revit, or strong AutoCAD experience with willingness to develop Revit skills.
- Strong communication and project coordination skills.
Preferred
- Approximately six years of relevant plumbing design experience.
- Fire protection design or documentation experience.
- Healthcare, outpatient facility, and medical gas design experience.
- Familiarity with NFPA 99 and FGI requirements.
- ASSE 6060 Medical Gas Systems Designer certification or equivalent experience.
- Experience producing coordinated Revit construction documents.
- Construction administration experience including field observations, submittals, and RFIs.
Alternative Backgrounds Considered
We welcome candidates from a variety of backgrounds, including:
- Journeyman or master plumbers with design, shop drawing, or coordination experience.
- Plumbing designers transitioning from AutoCAD to Revit.
- Strong plumbing designers seeking to expand their fire protection expertise
