Manager, State Grassroots Advocacy

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, is seeking a Manager, State Grassroots Advocacy in our Washington D.C. office. This high performing mid-level professional will work to advance the Academy’s public policy agenda by supporting and further developing grassroots infrastructure that expands organizational capacity and outcomes. This position is the policy and advocacy connection between the Academy and affiliate state policy efforts, including training members on effective advocacy and alignment with the Academy’s positions and stances. 


Responsibilities:

  • Organize and manage state initiatives and grassroots advocacy campaigns including initiation, monitoring and analyzing data and reporting as directed. 
  • Oversee and direct the compilation of policy and advocacy state strategic measures and collaborate with Federal Grassroots Advocacy Manager to draft the annual report.  
  • Responsible for meeting with affiliates and other Academy groups to review policy programs of work and develop goals and objectives to increase member engagement. 
  • Coordinate and deliver advocacy education and training for state issues including consumer protection and licensure, reimbursement and other priorities. 
  • Develop the state portion of the Professional Development and Training Plan. 
  • Plans and delivers trainings, forums and other educational events using online, in-person and other formats in collaboration with subject matter experts. Participate in the planning of the Nutrition and Dietetics Advocacy Summit to ensure state issues are communicated. 
  • Manage all resources and assets required to support state advocacy efforts including the development of communications, advocacy toolkits, resources and educational materials. Assist affiliates in the development of policy resources, oral and written testimony and other policy communications.  
  • Monitor and manage state regulatory and legislative policy issue areas and provide guidance to affiliates on Academy stances after consulting with senior Academy staff. 
  • Meet and build relationships with members of Congress, Hall of States representatives, state legislators, agency officials and other policy stakeholders to lobby for Academy issues. 
Requirements

  

· A bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition, dietetics, political science or public health with an emphasis in nutrition or public policy or a related field required, plus one year of academic training. 

· RDN credential and certification and advanced training in grassroots advocacy and project management desirable

· 3-4 years of relevant, demonstrated experience managing legislation and/or government relations and advocacy

· Knowledge of and interest in political processes and public policy processes are desired

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills

· Able to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously

· Self-starter and team player

· Strong strategic thinking and interpersonal skills 


This position is located in our Washington, D.C. office.
