The Summit Area YMCA is seeking an experienced, hands-on Wellness Center Manager to lead daily operations of our Wellness Centers at the Summit and Berkeley Heights branches. We’re looking for someone who knows how a fitness center runs, from supporting members and supervising staff to keeping equipment and workout areas safe, clean, and ready for use.


You’ll be a visible presence on the wellness floor, building relationships with members, coaching staff, and taking initiative to address daily needs. The right candidate brings practical fitness center experience, sound judgment, and the confidence to step in, organize priorities, and lead by example.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily Wellness Center operations at both branches, maintaining consistent standards for service, safety, cleanliness, and staff performance.
  • Spend at least 50% of your time on the wellness floor, engaging members, supporting staff, and monitoring daily operations.
  • Train, schedule, and supervise wellness staff, ensuring appropriate coverage and clear expectations across both locations.
  • Coach staff on member service, floor supervision, safe equipment use, and daily responsibilities.
  • Monitor equipment condition, coordinate maintenance and repairs, and follow through on issues.
  • Ensure workout areas are clean, organized, welcoming, and ready for members.
  • Support member orientations and engagement initiatives, including fitness challenges and special events.
  • Address member concerns promptly and professionally, using sound judgment and involving leadership when needed.
  • Collaborate with program directors and branch leadership to support wellness programming and the overall member experience.


Salary & Benefits

This full-time, non exempt-level position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week. This role generally works Monday–Friday during standard business hours, with occasional evening or weekend responsibilities. The salary range for this position is $23.00 - $28.00/ hour, based on experience. The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of experience working directly in a fitness center or wellness center, with responsibilities involving fitness floor operations, member support, and equipment use.
  • Previous experience supervising, scheduling, or training staff strongly preferred.
  • Associate degree in fitness, exercise science, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, relevant certifications, and experience.
  • Working knowledge of fitness equipment, safe exercise practices, and basic anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize daily needs, address concerns, and work independently while collaborating with colleagues.
  • Strong computer skills and comfort using scheduling and other operational systems.
  • Current CPR/AED certification.
  • Ability to work regularly at both the Summit and Berkeley Heights branches.
  • Demonstrated maturity and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
