Department Manager – Irrigation, Maintenance, & Landscaping

Are you an experienced green industry leader who loves building strong teams and growing a business? Ryan Lawn & Tree is looking for a Department Manager to lead our Irrigation, Maintenance, Landscaping operations.


In this role, you'll own the overall performance of the department, from financial goals and customer satisfaction to recruiting, training, and developing your team. You'll set clear standards, lead strategic planning, and partner with other department leaders to help the branch succeed. You'll also stay connected to the field, stepping into production when needed and working directly with clients. 


This role will oversee a team of 10+ associates and about $2 million in annual revenue, with plans to grow to 20+ associates and $4 million or more in annual revenue. It's a great opportunity for a leader who wants to build and shape a growing department.


What You'll Do


Lead Department Performance

  • Lead the department through strategic planning to set financial goals that align with company goals
  • Get team buy-in on goals, keep a constant eye on the department's financial position, and make adjustments as needed
  • Own the department's overall financial performance, including production, sales, and growth
  • Look for opportunities to innovate and reduce costs
  • Make sure the department meets customer satisfaction standards measured by NPS, Google reviews, and other metrics, and take corrective action when scores fall short

Build and Develop Your Team

  • Recruit, hire, and retain a strong team in partnership with HR
  • Coach team members to build their skills, efficiency, and knowledge, and make sure they have the tools, resources, and training needed to serve customers well
  • Set clear standards aligned with Ryan Pro Standards, and hold leaders and associates accountable using the Crucial Conversations model
  • Ensure every associate receives their 90-day, mid-year, and annual performance evaluations, along with annual compensation reviews
  • Set department goals aligned with company strategy for every associate
  • Take part in associate development and succession planning
  • Lead team meetings, leadership meetings, and continuing education

Oversee Field Operations

  • Oversee field operations with a focus on teamwork, efficiency, and quality
  • Step into field production as needed to meet department goals and customer needs
  • Make sure facilities and equipment needs are met, and all legal and safety requirements are achieved, working closely with the Safety team
  • Stay current with industry trends, new products, equipment, and services

Take Care of Our Clients

  • Work with clients regularly, and handle customer service recovery and retention for dissatisfied customers

Collaborate Across the Company

  • Partner with other department managers, directors, and senior leaders on strategic initiatives, special projects, labor sharing, referrals, and revenue growth
  • Work with Marketing to target campaigns toward services with growth potential
Requirements
  • 5+ years of lawn and landscape maintenance and landscaping leadership experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of irrigation system service and installation
  • Thorough knowledge of landscape maintenance and design/build practices, along with general knowledge of other Ryan services
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Great Game of Business (GGOB) and department business operations
  • Strong problem-solving and leadership skills, with the ability to foster open communication and the sharing of ideas
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft and Google software, and with field-based software systems
  • General knowledge of department equipment maintenance, and the ability to safely operate department equipment
  • A valid driver's license and DOT certificate
  • The ability to lift 50 pounds, push and pull objects while walking 3 or more miles per day, and work outdoors in all weather, year-round
  • Successful completion of position-specific Ryan U training and field assessment
