Spatial Front, Inc. (SFI), a two-time USAToday Top Workplaces awardee and Washington Top Workplaces honoree, is seeking a results-driven Backend Software Engineer to support a high-visibility federal program focused on modernizing data-driven processes that evaluate vehicle safety performance. This role supports the development and maintenance of scalable, secure web applications and APIs that power a mission-critical data platform used by government stakeholders and external partners.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative engineer with strong backend development experience, a passion for clean and maintainable code, and comfort working in Agile and DevSecOps environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and architect backend software applications supporting a modern, data-centric platform
- Develop, maintain, and optimize scalable, high-performance applications using Node.js
- Build and maintain RESTful APIs and integrate with external data sources
- Implement reusable, modular components and support state management strategies
- Perform unit and end-to-end testing using tools such as Postman
- Participate in peer code reviews, ensuring adherence to coding standards and best practices
- Collaborate closely with senior engineers, UI/UX designers, QA teams, and stakeholders in an Agile/Scrum environment
- Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical issues
- Contribute to technical documentation, including system design, APIs, and workflows
- Support CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins and GitHub Actions
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
OR - Six (6) years of equivalent professional experience in place of a degree
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a backend Software Engineer
- Proficiency with Node.js, RESTful APIs, GitHub, AWS, and API Gateway
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum and DevSecOps environments
- Hands-on experience with Jira and Confluence
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Public Trust clearance (fingerprinting required)
Desired Qualifications
- Experience developing APIs using Node.js and Express
- Familiarity with AWS services such as S3, Lambda, DynamoDB, and API Gateway
- Exposure to Docker and container orchestration tools like Kubernetes
- Understanding of application security best practices, including OAuth and JWT
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
- Prior experience supporting federal government projects

- Clearance: Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and able to obtain a Public Trust clearance.

- Salary Range: $80,000 – $130,000 annually
