POSITION TITLE: Receiving & Sales Associate  

REPORTS TO: Retail Store Manager 

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt, PART-TIME

COMPENSATION:$17-$20/Hr.

LOCATION: San Diego, CA

Position Summary:

The Receiving & Sales Associate is responsible for receiving, sorting, and pricing donated goods while delivering excellent customer service. This role supports both back-of-house receiving operations and front-of-store interactions, including answering questions, sharing Kitchens for Good’s mission, and occasionally operating the cash register. 

The position also assists with basic event coordination for in-store events and donor engagement activities and plays an active role in training and guiding volunteers working in the store.  


Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Receiving & Processing

  • Greet donors warmly and safely receive donated items. 
  • Sort, inspect, and categorize donations following quality and safety guidelines. 
  • Price merchandise accurately according to established procedures. 
  • Organize processed items for timely placement on the sales floor. 
  • Maintain a clean and safe receiving and processing area. 
  • Follow all safe lifting and equipment-handling protocols. 

Customer Service, Mission Engagement & Sales Support  

  • Follow established opening and closing procedures. 
  • Answer customer questions regarding merchandise, pricing, and store policies. 
  • Share Kitchens for Good’s mission and programs with donors and shoppers. 
  • Assist customers on the sales floor by providing product information and support. 
  • Process customer transactions accurately, including handling a variety of payment types, processing returns and exchanges, and balancing the cash register in accordance with policies and procedures. 
  • Respond to customer complaints professionally, ensuring issues are addressed or escalated appropriately. 
  • Restock shelves and support visually appealing merchandise displays. 

Volunteer Collaboration & Training 

  • Welcome and support volunteers working in receiving, sorting, merchandising, and events. 
  • Provide hands-on training to volunteers on store procedures, safety guidelines, and quality standards. 
  • Assign tasks to volunteers based on skill level and store needs. 
  • Model excellent customer service and reinforce Kitchens for Good’s mission and values. 
  • Communicate volunteer progress or needs to supervisors. 

Event Coordination Support 

  • Assist with planning, setup, and breakdown for small in-store events and donor engagement activities. 
  • Prepare materials, merchandise, or displays needed for events. 
  • Provide onsite customer support and hospitality during events. 
  • Collaborate with staff and volunteers to ensure smooth event logistics. 

Teamwork & Store Operations

  • Communicate effectively with team members about donations, inventory, and operational needs. 
  • Assist with general store upkeep, cleanliness, and safety. 
  • Support loss-prevention procedures. 
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative, mission-driven team environment.

Work Environment: 

This position operates in a retail store environment and requires work in both receiving/warehouse areas and customer-facing sales floor spaces. The employee may experience exposure to varied temperatures near donation drop-off entrances, as well as regular contact with dust and assorted donated items. The role is performed in moderate noise levels generated by customers, equipment, and general store activity. The position also involves frequent interaction with diverse customers, donors, volunteers, and staff, and may require flexibility during high-volume donation periods or peak retail times. This role uses equipment such as cash registers, computers, phones, photocopy and scanning machines.


Physical Demands:

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is routinely required to stand, walk, bend, reach, and work in a fast-paced, physically active environment. The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing 20–50 pounds, with assistance available for heavier items. The position requires safe operation of carts, hand trucks, and other basic material-handling equipment. Manual dexterity, auditory and visual acuity are required for quality inspection, reading labels, operating the point-of-sale system, and following written and oral instructions or procedures. 


Essential Functions May Shift 

Essential functions of this role include duties in both receiving (back of house operations and sales floor (front of house operations). The proportion of time assigned to each function may change in response to staffing needs, donation volume, customer traffic, or organizational priorities. The ability to shift between tasks is an essential requirement of the position. 


Position Type & Expected Hours of Work: 

 This is a non-exempt?part-time position at 30 hours or less per week. SHOP KITCHENS FOR GOOD, is open 7 days a week from 10:00am-6:00pm. Scheduled hours and days will vary. Must be available to work on weekends and evening shifts 


Travel:

Employee may be expected to travel to as needed, to additional KFG locations.

Requirements

Education & Work Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 6 months of cash handling and/or customer service-related experience preferred 
  • Knowledge to efficiently navigate and utilize electronic devices (mobile devices and computers such as Apple, Samsung, or Google products.) 
  • Entry level experience and knowledge in Microsoft office 365 programs (Excel, Word, Power Point, One Drive, and Share Point)
