Description

The Custodian at Abundant Life is responsible for maintaining a clean, welcoming, and well-prepared environment throughout the church campuses. This position supports the mission of Abundant Life by ensuring that facilities are clean, orderly, and ready for worship services, ministry activities, events, and daily operations. The Custodian will work with the Facilities team to maintain the campus and provide excellent service to staff, volunteers, and guests.

  • Be committed to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18; 1 Peter 2:2) by assembling for instruction in God’s Word and engaging in the personal study of God’s Word. 
  • Responsibly use the resources at your disposal to foster the mission and vision of Abundant Life (1 Peter 5:1-4).
  • Participate in an Abundant Life group (Acts 2:41-42) as well as the discipleship ministry (Matthew 28:18-20).
  • Live in a way that glorifies God and aligns with the staff core values (1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9).
  • Be committed to giving to the needs of the saints (2 Corinthians 8:1-7 & 9:12).
  • Become a member of Abundant Life.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain the church campuses, including restrooms, classrooms, offices, hallways, common areas, and other designated spaces. 
  • Vacuum, mop, sweep, dust, sanitize, and perform other routine cleaning duties. 
  • Empty trash throughout the facility and ensure trash areas remain clean and orderly. 
  • Clean and restock restrooms and other supply areas as needed. 
  • Set up and tear down rooms for worship services, meetings, events, and ministry activities. 
  • Move, arrange, and stack chairs, tables, and other furniture as needed. 
  • Maintain a clean and organized appearance in high-traffic areas and public spaces. 
  • Assist with preparing the facility for weekend services and special events. 
  • Maintain awareness of facility conditions and report maintenance, safety, or repair needs to the Facilities team. 
  • Maintain adequate supplies and communicate when cleaning products or other materials need to be replenished. 
  • Assist with general facility needs and other duties as assigned by the Facilities team. 
  • Work cooperatively with staff, volunteers, and other team members to accomplish ministry and facility goals. 
  • Other duties as reasonably assigned.

Physical Demands

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Duties regularly require prolonged standing and walking; frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, twisting, grasping, and repetitive hand and arm movements. The employee must be able to safely operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, floor machines, mops, carts, and cleaning tools.

The employee may be required to:

  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull supplies, equipment, trash receptacles, and other materials weighing up to 35 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance or mechanical aids when appropriate.
  • Safely move tables, chairs, cleaning carts, furniture, and floor-care equipment.
  • Climb stairs and, when assigned duties require it, safely use step stools or ladders.
  • Work in low, high, confined, and hard-to-reach areas.
  • Maintain sufficient visual, auditory, and manual dexterity to identify hazards, follow safety procedures, use cleaning products and equipment, and communicate with staff and guests.

Education/Experience

  • Previous custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or facilities experience is preferred but not required. 
  • No formal education requirements.
