Position Summary
The Museum Educators (Part Time) will be part of the National Building Museum’s vision to offer curriculum, programs and experiences that educate and inspire future generations of building industry professionals and community leaders. These programs include school field trips, Girl Scout programs, birthday parties, family drop in programs, summer camp, and festivals. Under the direction of the Manager of School and Family Programs, Museum Educators are energetic, collaborative, and extremely organized individuals who facilitate an array of education programs.
Schedule
The Museum Educator will work 23 hours maximum per week to include weekend hours. We are seeking three Museum Educators, each will work one of the schedules below. Hours in the museum will vary depending on weekend programming but educators need to be free from 9:00 – 3:30 on their working days. Museum Educators will take up one of the following schedules:
- Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday
- Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Please note that this position’s schedule would shift to full time hours (M-F) in Summer of 2027 for a period of 6-8 weeks to staff Summer Camp. If the applicant is unable to work full time in the summer, they will be placed on leave for the summer and, if in good standing, have the option to return in the fall.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Presents high-quality education and engagement programming and effectively manages instructional materials.
- Uses knowledge of the principles, and practices pertaining to museum education and interpretive practices, hands-on, inquiry-driven, and mission-driven learning experiences.
- Works alongside other Museum Educators to clean and maintain educational spaces.
- Effectively applies organizational and problem-solving skills.
- When time allows, assists with updating programs based on visitor feedback, changing curriculum, and exhibition development schedule.
- Attend all training and learn new lesson content as needed.
- Able to answer visitors’ questions about the museum’s content, history and calendar while on the floor at the museum.
- Willing to lend support to all department programs as needed.
Qualifications
- Previous experience facilitating activities for children is required (experience in program delivery within a museum or gallery setting preferred).
- Degree in Education, History, Architectural Studies, Museum Studies, or a related field preferred.
- Ability to work effectively and professionally with groups in a public setting while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
- Ability to adapt quickly and think creatively.
- Must pass background check.
ADA Specifications
- This is an active work position that requires the ability to move about the Museum frequently and to position oneself to interact and communicate appropriately with visitors.
- Employee may be responsible for moving objects of up to 20 lbs. when needed.
