Job Overview

The Director of IT leads the organization’s technology strategy and operations for San Antonio and provides shared services, governance, and oversight for affiliates. This leader ensures secure, reliable, and scalable technology that advances the organization’s mission and enables high-performing teams. The role integrates enterprise architecture, cybersecurity, data governance, and vendor management, aligning technology investments to strategic outcomes, and ensuring consistent standards across the network.


Job Responsibilities


Strategy & Governance:

  • Develop and execute a strategic IT roadmap aligned with organizational strategy and programmatic impact.
  • Establish relationships to help build better workings across AVANCE San Antonio and subsidiaries to prioritize approve standards and manage risk on projects.
  • Define and maintain enterprise IT policies (security, acceptable use, data retention, access, incident response, business continuity).
  • Drive architecture standards for identity, devices, networks, data, and integrations across SAN ANTONIO and subsidiaries.
  • Design, implement and maintain a uniform and common architecture for computer hardware, software, telecommunications, local area and wide networks for the entire agency. This includes continually identifying emerging information technologies to assimilate, integrate, and introduce within the agency.
  • Develop and distribute policies and procedures that apply to hardware, software, and telecommunications systems and their use by AVANCE staff and other authorized individuals.
  • Develop, review and certify all back-up and disaster recovery procedures and plans.
  • Network administration (including backup, security management, user account management, e-mail systems including e-mail web servers, internet access, office systems and applications support). 
  • Supports server, network and desktop hardware, software and applications. 

Cybersecurity, Risk, & Compliance

  • Own the organization’s information security program, including policy, training, and testing (phishing simulations, tabletop exercises).
  • Implement a security framework (e.g., NIST CSF), and guide chapter affiliates toward compliance with required controls.
  • Oversee third-party risk management, vulnerability management, logging/SIEM, EDR, MDM, email security, and MFA.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and contracts (e.g., HIPAA/FERPA where applicable, state data breach laws, PCI for donations, grantor requirements).
  • Maintain incident response, disaster recovery, and business continuity plans; run annual tests.

Enterprise Applications & Data

  • Collaborate with internal leaders on the strategy, lifecycle, and roadmap for core systems (e.g., Microsoft 365/Azure AD/Entrap, CRM or Salesforce, ERP/finance, HRIS, LMS, case/program management, data warehouse/BI).
  • Establish a data governance program (data ownership, definitions, quality, retention, access).
  • Lead integrations and interoperability across SAN ANTONIO, subsidiaries, and affiliates (APIs, iPaaS, ETL).
  • Advance analytics and reporting that drive program outcomes, compliance, and operational efficiency.

Infrastructure & Operations

  • Ensure highly available, secure, and cost-effective infrastructure (cloud-first where feasible): networking, endpoints, servers, storage, backups, and connectivity for SAN ANTONIO and supported sites.
  • Oversee ITIL-aligned service management (incident, request, change, problem).
  • Meet SLAs for service desk, onboarding/offboarding, and device lifecycle management.
  • Manage device standards (Windows/Mac), MDM, image baselines, patching, and asset inventory.
  • Vendor & Budget Management
  • Lead RFPs, contract negotiations, and performance management of MSPs, SaaS, and telecom providers.
  • Optimize total cost of ownership (licenses, cloud spend, hardware refresh cycles).
  • Develop and manage the IT Opex/Capex budget and multi-year investment plan.
  • Drive license rationalization, consolidation, and usage optimization (e.g., M365 E3/E5 mix).
  • Program & Project Delivery
  • Deliver key initiatives (examples): tenant consolidation, identity modernization, security uplift, CRM redesign, data warehouse and Power BI rollout, and VOIP/UCaaS modernization.
  • Leadership & Culture
  • Build and mentor a high-performing, service-oriented IT team; foster a culture of security, equity, and user-centered design.
  • Partner with Programs, Finance, People & Culture, and Operations to translate needs into solutions.
  • Champion digital inclusion for staff and communities served; ensure accessibility and multilingual considerations in solutions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in CS or CIS + Certifications: CISSP, CISM, Security+, Azure Administrator/Architect, Microsoft 365, ITIL, PMP/Agile.

Work Experience

Required:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressive IT leadership
  • 3–5+ years managing managers or multi-site teams.
  • Demonstrated experience in multi-entity environments (subsidiaries/affiliates/franchises, shared services, or federated nonprofits).

Preferred:

  • 8–10+ years of progressive IT leadership
  • Nonprofit sector experience and familiarity with grantor, donor, and program data requirements.

Additional Skills

  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Proficiency in Office 365.
  • Proficiency in MS-SQL environments.
  • Proficiency in Internet Information Server and other Microsoft applications.
  • Microsoft Windows configurations, installation, maintenance, support and troubleshooting of TCP/IP 
  • Networks supporting all associated applications
  • System development, complex project management, knowledge of ASA/ VPN/Firewall, Wireless Controllers and Access Points
  • Internet/intranets, Active Directory
  • Experience with Phone Systems.
  • Proficient in helpdesk software, RDS/Terminal Services, Backup Solutions, Hyper-V, Microsoft Lync, CRM, SANS
  • Experience in volume licensing.
  • Spanish fluency helpful but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve high-performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.
  • Very strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders, including staff, board members, external partners and donors.
  • Highly resourceful team-player, with the ability to be extremely effective independently with the capability of managing numerous simultaneous projects.

Travel

  • Ability to travel to various sites: Dependable transportation is required daily with a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record (subject to annual MVR (Motor Vehicle Report) check and policy), current auto liability insurance and be bondable by AVANCE, Inc.
  • Travel required up to 25-40% of the time for work-related site visits, meetings, and functions.

Working Conditions  

  • Work is generally performed in an office environment. 
  • Noise level in the work environment is moderate to occasionally loud (examples: business office with computers and printers, light to moderate traffic, human voices). 

Mental and Physical Demands  

Maintain emotional control under stress; work with interruptions and deadlines; walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing, use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; occasional: lifting/carrying, pulling/pushing 10-30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.


Environmental Factors  

Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.). Occasional exposure to weather-related conditions when working in outside environment/neighborhoods and events.
